Good deal haven't seen a laser printer for this price for a while
#3
The ink is so expensive for this. Make sure you do not buy originals!
#4
Don't forget that it comes with a starter cartridge capable of 700 pages - that is only 50% of the advertised capacity.

I would get it if i could but unfortunatly it's not available at any of my local stores! :x

I would say that Samsung are one of the easiest cartridges that are able to be refilled...around £7 for a refill bottle of toner including the resit module for the cartridge...I would get one if I needed one...

Got a link to a decent seller?

Hmm, you can't do that with the starter cartridge according to this: http://www.topinks.co.uk/shop/Samsung_ML-1640___ML-2240_Toner_Refills.html

You have to do some soldering (I don't think so) or buy a full replacement cartridge first at £40+.
#9
I had a look at this for myself to replace my aging 1510. But the cartridges are so much more. I pay £20 for the 1510 with 3000 pages print. The 1640 catridges are at least £15 more and only last for 1500 pages. I will try to get a discontinued 1710 which uses the cheaper cartridges.

It appears you may be able to reset the counter for the initial toner by downgrading the firmware after you've refilled the cartridge. See:- http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/59558#169

EDIT:: Or possibly not if it has the latest firmware - http://blog.sahat-tambunan.com/2009/11/28/reset-ml-1640-and-ml-2240-for-refill-toner/#comment-2162

MELTED - Shame because this would have been a bargain.... as new cartrdiges are at least £45 for 2000 pages with is more expensive than my old injet (£18 for 800 black pages)
#12
Shall be ordering one of these for the inlaws me thinks.

samsung lasers are often this price - paid that for my two - ml1520 and ml3051
samsung mono lasers are the superb value...unlike other manufacturers the the yield in their cartridges is always generous.....i had an ml1520 with a 1000 page cartridge in it, yet i managed to print at least 4000 pages on it...sold this on ebay with no cart for £20 (after paying £40 2 years earlier)

only bought my current printer an ml3051n to replace it as i needed a network printer - this came with a 4000 page cartridge, though i printed approx 10000 pages with it

agreed, but i find they last longer than their stated yield, not only that unless theyve changed it you can refill samsung carts or buy refurbed ones cheap.....paid £40 for a refurbed one for my samsung ml3051n (new ones are £70 for a 4000 page cart)

I have had the ml-1610 1610 for over 3 years great printers.

A bit of warning on Samsung Refill cartridges though.

I got Samsung ML 2010 laser printer. Obviously, I went down the route like everyone which is refilling.

It turned out the black text are a bit faded (Grey) and not solid black anymore with refilled cartridge.

I changed all the setting in printer software but it doesn't make difference. I heard that the refill toner powder does not work properly with print drum. I might be wrong.

I welcome any advises from fellow Samsung printers users.

My ML2010 has been working for ages on a refill, with quality same as the original. There cannot be a cheaper way to print?
#21
I have a ML-1510 which has a refillable cartridge. The cheapest refill ink is 6.99 on ebay, does anyone know if cartridgeworld or the like sell similar toner refill ink cheaper? It's only ink after all.
#22
Does anyone know the best mono laser printer for value of the refills please? I'm looking to buy a mono laser and this did look quite a good deal, but i'm not very well up on the refills side of things
#23
wouldnt reccomend this for anything even vaguely heavy duty, we've had nothing but bad luck with samsungs at work, plus as mentioned original toners are VERY expensive, and barely live up to the suggested page count, and the compatibles we buy now are even worse for number of pages you'll get out of it

My ML-1210 is still going strong after 9 years, and I've only just refilled the second cartridge with a £6 eBay refill with no probs, it's as good as new! I enquired at Cartridge World and they were only interested in flogging me a refurbed refilled one for £25, get the flock outta here! Did me a favour, refilling is a piece of pish!

Do you use toner save mode? This can reduce the life of the drum and cause faded printing. It is generally advised to never use toner save mode if you intend to reuse the cartridge/drum after the supplied toner runs out.

If you don't use toner save mode then maybe the toner is the wrong type?

Our 2570 is an absolute workhorse, and a replacement toner cart was £16.99 on ebay.

I never knew this, going to switch toner save off! It's amazing what fellow HUKD members know...

I've had a look on the net and this can use refills. It involves downgrading the printer firmware if it is the newer .80 fimware (as Samsung have patched the previous hack) and that's it.

It appears that .93 is the problem version (dated 23 Nov 2009), which has been fixed to stop you downgrading or using the shorting trick. see http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/59558#259

hopefully these will be older stock than the 23 nov firmware. this looks like a normal price for these printers so may be worth going to argos and asking them to print out a test page on which it will say what firmware version it is if any of you decide to buy this.
#31
Does this have wireless capabilities?

I have a 1510 and love it apart from I can't print to it from my laptop downstairs.

OS Version : 1.29.00.84 05-13-2009 - so 13th May It's the last two digits which is the problem. .83 is no good, so I'm assuming neither is .84, but the site a few posts back has a link to .66 which is works with the pin shorting trick.
#34
according to some of the posts it was possible to flash it with the downgrade firmware each time and this reset the page count which obviated the need for pin shorting.

one left in Slough (Bath Road), two left in High Wycombe.

Links to older firmwares (although I dont know who is providing this). I recommend you read the full thread though...

http://www.newerth.com/daemon/ML-1640_V1.01.00.66.zip
another v.60 http://www.multiupload.com/15PKSGJC60

Has anyone got the official firmware and can they confirm the exe's are legit?

Instructions:
1)Downloaded zip file
2)Extracted zip file contents into a new directory
3)Plug in printer and make sure its marked Online in your Printers control applet in Windows
4)Drag and drop the ML1640_V1010060.fls file onto the usbprns2.exe binary
5)Light will turn amber
6)Get a cuppa
7)Some people have reported theirs to restart and set itself to green position. As previously said I restarted mine manually.

There is also a firmware patch which fixes the printer to always register the cartridge as full, so only has to be applied once. Looks like you can patch the .93 version too http://blog.sahat-tambunan.com/2009/11/28/reset-ml-1640-and-ml-2240-for-refill-toner/#comment-2175

I just connected it to a desktop and shared the printer.

Then from your laptop just add a new printer and select local printer- and new port

then put in the network path eg: \\hp-office\samsung-mono
