Superb picture and fast motion handling capabilities give this plasma a class leading edge.

Conclusion
The Samsung PS42Q is the most accomplished 42in Plasma we have come across for the price. Not only is it a superb HD performer, the SD performance is more than a pleasant surprise with performance that does not quite match a CRT but comes close.

all of my research so far leads me to believe the panasonic px70 is the best plasma you can buy around this price...unless anyone knows better?

For a start I think that panny is around £80+ more than this one, has 2 HDMI sockets (not 3) and Contrast Ratio: 10,000:1 for pannny and this Samsung has 15,000:1

Down to opinions really :)

the standard def picture is supposd to be better on the panny - which will b most of my viewing.
its hard to decide with so many different opinions!

There are diminishing returns for contrast ratio long before you reach even 10k:1. Once you're up anywhere that high then other issues like colour accuracy become more important.

Personally I have a 42" Panny PX60, but I think this Samsung is actually supposed to be better for Freeview SD than the PX70 or according to the review site I was reading anyway, probably not much in it.

Quoting from a review

Many consumers will buy this unit for its HD performance, but will be more than pleasantly surprised with its Standard Definition (SD) capabilities. The Samsung PS42Q97HDX really is a Plasma to content with in this respect. Never before has the technology come so close to matching a good CRT for SD display. On close inspection there is some digital noise and a slight trace of motion blurring.

As you would expect the picture deteriorates slightly with Freeview as opposed to Sky, but this is still one of the most composed plasma's we have come across.

I have the PX70 and chose it because i too waych SD material 95% of the time, Sky+ does look very nice indeed :)

I have one of these and sky HD box. I am over the moon with it.
