I've been considering this set, but I think i'd go with John Lewis £799 with 5 year warranty & free delivery.

Different model No, It's got slightly better spec too

What a lot of rubbish. My plasma TV is not 1080p and I bet you could not tell the difference. I have Sky HD and the picture is excellent.

Hmmmm!!! As someone once said to me when I was looking at buying a new tv, why do you want 1080p unless you intend to watch blu rays all the time and play the ps3.

Ive got this telly and its a whopper slight problem is its very prone to screen burn, which is easily got rid of by running the screen burn function for an hour or so.

We thought seriously about this TV a while as it's been cheap for a while. The thing that put us off was the power consumption. It's rated at 450W, but uses more than that in tests. O.K. if you also want a radiator............ A nice TV at a good price, but will cost a lot to run.

It was sarcasm, hence the :whistling: , thought I'd get in before all the other 720P haters who usually pop up in these threads! :p

I have an older version of this TV, and it's fantastic with everything I throw at it, Sky HD, HD-DVD, Blue Ray, PS3, 360, Wii, PC. etc, highly recommended if this is anywhere near as good as mine.

That'll be screen retention then, screen burn's permanent. ;-)

I understood the sarcasm... too many highly strung peeps on HUKD :whistling:

My dads looking to buy a new LCD, without wanting to hijack the thread can anyone please answer the following:

1. 1080p wont be needed for the forseeable when you only watch normal sky, dont watch films (no blue ray requirement) and dont play games.

2. Is the John Lewis guarantee worth anything, the guy at Comet (obviously no vested interest) said that they dont cover call out fees OR parts and labour, leaving the question.. what they hell do they cover then?!?!? Im assuming he was talking out of his bum but would like to hear from anyone who has made a claim on their JL purchases

Any responses would be gratefully received

Panasonic. Even though it's not the 80B it's a halfway house between the 70B (a highly ranked panel) and the 80B so it's still pretty damn good. If you can find the extra for the 80B it is better but 8B is no slouch. Better than the Sammy, even though the Sammy is good - don't get me wrong - the 50" sammy has a 1366x768 panel so no rectangular pixels.

Oh and the 8B is discontinued so you may have issues finding them as I did (I went for the Sony KDL40V4000 instead in the end).

MUCH better - The Panasonic PX80B but with full 1080p HD. That would be the one to go for if you have the cash.

I've got this TV. The specs are good and it does Sky / Xbox 360 / DVD player with upscaling all fine. For the price is very good value for a 50"

As someone pointed out earlier though, the sound quality is very poor. If you're going to use a surround kit then this shouldn't matter though. Plasmas generally don't have great sound, and you really should have a seperate kit to get the most, but my older LG 42" definitely had better sound.

No worries, neither was I, just pre-empting the negative replies, and surprised there haven't been any, only mine, lol!

If your watching more SD than HD I'd recommend the 42PX80B rather than the PZ80B...

[*]I bought a 42" Sammy from JL in March, and after a few months I decided that I wasn't happy with the picture, especially for football viewing. JL sent a Samsung engineer the next day, and then agreed to replace the set free of charge with the newer version (PS42A457), which incidentally I am chuffed with. 10/10 for John Lewis I say
[*]Power output is high, no need for fire on in the lounge at the moment.
[*]Sound on mine, and possibly the 50" in this deal, is very weedy so separate system is essential (in my opinion)
[*]Compared "Uncharted" PS3 game between mine and my brothers Sony Bravia LCD at the weekend (not sure of model). Samsung wins absolutely hands down on picture (especially blacks) and looks/styling. Sony won hands down on sound only.
[*]Very happy with the new Samsung, no image retention so far.[/LIST]Hope this helps

Thanks for that jonwalker67, to be honest Im more bothered about the JL service than anything else. As I said, my Dad only watches a bit of sport, wont watch a film (prefers the garden and reading) and defo wont be playing games (although I may depress myself and see what COD4 looks like in High Def!!). My main problem was that the Comet guy was really slagging them, I know hes just trying to secure a sale but my Dad was a little put off. Anyway, seems like JL offer a great service.... doubt you would have got a call back from Comet never mind an upgrade! :p

Thanks again, its put my mind at rest about JL  (repped you for taking the time out to help)

No probs, I'm glad to help. I'm sure there are lots of people that have had complaints with JL, but personally speaking I cannot fault their customer services and I have had several dealings with them. (I have no affiliation with them however)

COD4 is AWESOME in high def (especially through a decent surround sound system)

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is even better in my opinion

Thanks for the advice and for the Currys link, but that's a 42" and as our viewing distance is 13-15 feet, my hubby would prefer the 50" over the 42.

Our local Comet has it in stock so think we'll just go that.

Thanks

I've just ordered this set from John Lewis £799 + 5yr warranty + free delivery.

It's coming Tuesday and I can't wait!

I was in Currys the other day and I was asking about them matching John Lewis for the Warranty, the woman told me that the JL warranty wasn't worth anything, that they will charge you call out fee's and parts etc - I think Currys staff are just all given the same handbook of Lies to learn, it's a load of ****.

My father also bought the 42a457 on Wednesday and it's superb, got it price matched with richer sounds at £499 (gone up to £529 now)

If you think its superb now, just wait a couple of weeks, it'll get better and better as it settles in.
