It depends what you want the laptop for.

What are your priorities? Battery life? HDMI? Graphics good enough to play SIms 3?

dont cry ,pay the extra and get one with a card then:-D

looks a smart machine for the money.

this got a best buy award in computer shopper . The only thing im concerned about is the spacing between the keys - will collect dust easier , and the graphics card which is useless for newer games .

According to some reviews it has a nice screen, keyboard and battery life.

But it doesn't have an esata port, which i personally feel is very important if you intend transferring large files regularly. The Toshiba's at around the same price do.

Also cannot see on the Samsung website details of the price of extending the warranty from 1-3.

and their website only has the 530 with a T4400 processor. Not that that's a problem but it's a bit weird that it's not mentioned.

http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-computers/everyday/NP-R530-JA02UK/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=specification

This laptop seems a cut above the rest at the price but the lack of esata port is a deal breaker for me (at least until usb3 comes in)

Ugly HP though.

Seen one of these Samsung's in the flesh, very stylish laptop, and the specs are perfect for basic use.

I don't need a numeric keypad and hate widescreens. Are there any good non widescreen deals around?

Regarding the OP, this one seems better value if you dont want i3 processor. Its got 4GB Ram and 500GB drive.

What are the benefits of i3 if you only do word processing, Excel, photos etc?
#15
I'm looking for a laptop that can play Sims3 for my gf. Is this good enough for this or can anyone point me in the right direction? Appreciate the advice
#16
Could someone give me some example of what sort of games should be OK on this and which wouldnt.
Also would it be good enough to edit and play around with photos on and videos.
Thank you in advance.

There was an even better deal (bringing the price of it down to £400, or, £300 or so after a tradein of any working laptop!) for a slightly higher spec'd model of that laptop direct from HP last month .

Why do you hate widescreen? They've stopped with non-widescreen laptops a long time ago, because widescreen is better in every way.

thats a good question, but what would be the benefits of having 4GB and 500GB for word processing, Excel, photos etc?...... none! people see 4gb and 500gb and think thats great because it is bigger but they wont see any benefit, the i3 cpu is brilliant tho (above most 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo's) and the built in graphics are a massive step up from norm

things 'I' think are important.
most important is screen size, not too sure if id be happy with 15" but as you cant change this later just make sure its big enough for your needs
ram, 2gb min (on win7) is a must and more is better but over 4gb for everyday use is prolly too much
gfx card, a dedicated one frees up system ram but if your not going to play games then onboard will do just remember it will use some of your ram
HDD these days 320gb seems the normal but think about how much music and photos you have, whats the point of paying for a 500gb one if you dont have that much stuff and an external one can be bought if needed but a little homework can help you, just add up what you use now. an SSD will make the lappy quicker to use but has much less space and could/will cost more
Connections/outputs if you want to watch hd films from this to a large tv then make sure it has hdmi out
most other things come as standard ie usb, dvd rom etc
id suggest setting a price limit and see whats offered, generally the more you pay the more you get but then theres overkill to factor into it, no point paying £1000 to surf the web and some brands will cost a lot more than others with the same spec but cheaper brand names. sony springs to mind here, are they any better? only you can decide, its your money

I'm after something for internet, storage of large amounts of photos, word processing, playing DVDs on, normal stuff really, would this be suitable? Saw a Toshiba deal on here a couple off weeks ago but this Samsung looks better.

Thanks

Yeah this would easily do that

Why is this so hot? I suspect that it comes with 32 bit win 7 and if that's the case then you can get it with more ram and hard drive space for £12 cheaper at pixmania.

Thanks for that, you are obviously correct about the hard drive capacity, especially when I have a 1TB external drive.

MY current laptop has a 120GB drive which is almost full so I def need something larger. I find externals a hassle, I like to have stuff to hand all the time.

My current processor is an AMD Turion TL-60 2.00 GHx, 1.87 RAM, so I assume I would appreciate the difference.

nice looking laptop for day to day use - it's not going to be a machine for a power user, but otherwise looks decent. Heat added.

u dont know about the i3 then do you:)
same as a 2.4Ghz core 2 duo, which a year and a bit ago would make it one of the very best. dont get this confused with a pentium dual core.

comparison of:
x9100 intel core 2 extreme
this cpu i3
t4400 pentium dual core (went hot at £400 4gb 500gb)
t3000 deleron dual core (in £300 2gb laptops)
and your tl-60

cinebench multi render

ok so they are only numbers:) but you can see the gap between this and the t4400 which cant be found for under £400 really, and you can also see how it isn't too far behind an insanely expensive cpu.

You might be hard-pushed to find a laptop with a card good enough to play 'newer games' (at settings comprable with the laptop's display resolution) - and certainly not at a sub £700 price.

I'm guessing that if dust can get between the keys easily it should vacuum out just as easily? I can't say though - I'm totally confused with all these new keyboard designs as to which will be best

As has been said - the HP deal with 5% off (£435 delivered) free-headphones and possible £100 trade-in on an old laptop is also worth considering.

See here for details on the GMA HD graphics and tests on various games - it seems they're the best integrated graphics so far...

You'd be able to play your Sims 3 and I guess Stronghold etc. but not crysis etc.

I have this laptop, slightly weaker spec though. The build quality is amazing, had it for about 4 months or so now and not had a single fault with it. Fan barely comes on, if it does, it's quiet and it goes off fairly quickly. It's light and portable. Oh, and the battery lasts at least 2.5 hours, which is amazing (my old HP G70 was terrible, lucky to get an hour and a half).

Definitely recommend this laptop.

No - that's a Intel Pentium Dual Core T4300 in Currys at £399. Not a Core i3-330M.

Here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/692502/acer-aspire-5740g-core-i3-laptop-4g?
for £578 with Quidco, more ram, larger HD, and an ATI 5650 which is capable of running all the latest games at low/medium detail settings and games from a year or 2 ago at high and ultra.

Or...

If you want bluray & 1080p 18" display, Nvidia 9700m GT for £499. Only downside is that it's Vista:
