The first Dell Inspiron is exactly the same minus 1GB of Ram and the video card, but then is £150 cheaper. For £500 i.e. £100 less you can get an Inspiron with a much better i5 processor...

I want a graphics card of medium standard and 4gb would be nice. Samsung a far better machine than that Inspiron?

So exactly the same, except they're totally different?
This Samsung has a very powerful GT 330M gfx card in it, the Inspirion has only the on-chip Intel GMA HD; which is atleast 10 times slower.

You also can't fault the build quality of Samsungs - seems to me to be a very capable machine. Quite a good price too.

I'd still go for the bluray Acer from laptops direct though; cpu is a little slower, gpu is marginally slower, but you get a bigger higher res. screen & bluray, and it costs £70 less.
Though that's mostly because the installed OS doesn't bother me, and nor does the inferior build quality.

:edit:

I'm a bit dubious of the claim that the Samsung weighs only 1.2kg?!
I think that's utter BS; my Acer 8.9" netbook weighs 1.1kg - I doubt very much that a 15.6" machine could possibly weigh so little.
2.1kg perhaps.....

TehJumpingJawa (What a strange name!) - I love reading your comments good or bad. Can you go through the pros and cons of whole spec for me please. My friend works in Argos so Id get 10% off but without any official sort of review yet I need some good advice from all you experts please. Thanks in advance

Do you know what you are using currently in terms of the computer you have? If so I would happily let you have an idea how much difference you will see.

* Intel dual core i3-330M processor. - a very tasty processor, nothing amazing but at this point worth the compromise on bits like the dvd drive and screen res.
* 4GB DDR3 RAM. - Unlikely to need upgrading in the life of your machine.
* 15.6in screen size. - This one is up to you if you think it is enough or too much/little screen real estate.
* Resolution 1366 x 768 pixels. - The norm for this sort of laptop. Would be nicer with a 1080 ready screen but if you can live with a normal laptop screen then this will not make much difference. Also Samsungs as far as I am aware all use LED backlighting so less likely to go kaput and less power hungry so more battery life.
* 500GB SATA hard drive. - Currently the largest commercially available hard drive for laptops
* Multi format dual layer drive. - standard for years now, bluray would be nicer but unlikely with the other kit on this machine.
* nVidia GeForce GT 330M graphics - a good graphics card for a machine of this price range
* 512MB graphics memory. - As far as I am aware the basic graphics memory for this particular chip, but adding ram to a graphics card doesnt have the same effect as more system ram so 1gb would not perform overly faster.
* Multi card reader. - a pretty common accessory
* 4 USB ports. - This one comes down to preference as to how many you can live with/without
* e-SATA. - used for portable hard drives as an alternative to USB, nothing amazing about it just useful
* HDMI. - Good for connecting up to a HD ready TV for viewing on a bigger screen.
* Bluetooth. - A nice extra but to be expected at this price point
* 1.3MP webcam. - Average nothing special
* 802.11 b/g/n wireless enabled. - To be expected in anything over £400 (n wireless I mean) B and g are a standard to be expected in anything from netbooks up.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html
Processors list sorted by approximate performance compared to competitors. However, it isnt gospel as some processors do better at one thing than another but the roles are reversed on other tests, so if you are only going up about 10 places then you wont really see much point as the speed advantages are unlikely to be very heavily reaped.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
Same again but for graphics chips so the same advice really goes without saying.

Graphics rated approx 51st place and processor approx 55th. Nothing amazing but to move up the charts from that sort of position you either compromise elsewhere or start wasting money for very little net benefit.

Intel dual core

It's an i3 which is part of the new range and is superior to Core 2 Duo.

An obvious typo as it's 2.6Kg according to Samsung.

Cheaper here - http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Samsung_R580_701838.html

But, is this a known website or anyone had any experience from them?

EDIT: this site is offering lower specs - 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD

That price is much hotter! 1gb of ram & 180gb of HDD space is not worth the additional £70.

Even cheaper (by £2) here, free delivery too.(£526)

Exactly the same spec. as posted by OP is available here for £575 delivered.

Astec Thank you very much for informed comments! I am currently using a Sony Vaio intel pentium 4, xp, 40gb HDD 512mb ram!!! LOL! I want new machine to play action games like COD and do some office work plus lots of net surfing! Cheers for all the help boys.

Out of interest would windows 7 be 32 or 64 bit with this Samsung?

Even if it was the same spec you cannot argue with the argos no quibble return policy. I cant even begin to list the things I have returned with no problem because they pack in, from toasters to TVs everytime it has been simple and painless.

Sorry didn't see your comment. Been browsing the web by mobile phone as our internet has been out all day.

You will certainly be able to play COD etc without too much hastle and likely on some decent settings too. If your PC is a P4 then there is much to gain, however, you might want to try vista/Windows 7 before you buy as for some it isn't a step forward as XP was.

Everywhere else including the samsung site, it says has the 310M GT not the 330M GT as on the argos website?

Good question, if it's only 32 bit it will only "see" 3gb of the 4gb ram.

Where besides the Samsung site has it listed as the 310?

All the places i've found selling the Samsung R580 (both 3gb & 4gb varients) have the graphics card as "N11P-GE", which according to numerous sources is the codename for the GT 330M.

It's a troubling observation though; the GT 310M is significantly slower than the GT 330M.
Btw, the codename for the GT 310 is "n11m-ge1"

Danke Schone Herr Jawa. That's what I also found after googling the interweb. I've reserved one so will go and purchase, it will say in the box or the sticker on the keyboard area. The 330M GT is pretty good card just below the ATI 4670 1GB performance wise. Assuming it has the 330M GT, should be fitting with the new generation of Intels CPU. Shame about the screen resolution & lack of FireWire!

Seems that dell have opted for low-powered ATI's and older nvidia GPUs.

Compared to when I purchased a Core 2 Duo T7200 2Ghz, 2GB ram, 100GB HDD, 7600go 256MB 3.5 years ago for £1250, this is a bargain. It seems that Samsung are well built compared the other brands.
#21
If you look at the User Manual it lists the specs and both nVidia chips are listed as options as well as the stock Intel GPU.
#22
Can you let me know what you think please Sammy. Would that put you off buying it if only 32 bit windows only allowing 3gb of ram instead of 4?

Get the 3gb ram, 320gb HDD option @ £526 here. Much better value, and the OS being only 32bit will not render 1/4 of your ram unaddressable.
Nobrainer IMO.

See also here for spec's http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Samsung_R580-JS02UK_Laptop_NP-R580-JS02UK/version.asp?PID=749

Video here of the laptop - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twN-Ijpbaj4

BlackJackK - after thinking it over, I have opted for a Sony VAIO 14" purely for aesthetics & size. If you look at the video, it's gloss red. After having used a MacBook Pro 13" and Dell Vostro 13", just that little bit more portable.
I still would recommend this laptop to anyone as for £599, it's well above it's competitiors e.g. Dell, Acer and Samsung are known for a good build quality (see reviews of the older samsung Q310, Q410). Just reserve one at Argos and take a look.
#25
What Sony Vaio you getting Sammy? You got a link?

Just ordered one. Fingers crossed it's a GT 330M. Will be replacing my Vostro 1500 w/8600M GT. If the 330M is literally twice as powerful as the 8600M GT I'll be very, very happy!
#27
It's the sony vaio 14." CW range, the new one with Core i3 and the 330M GT. I can't for the life of me remember the exact model code, but can find it on the sony website, VPCCW2S1E??? The old one is priced at £600 so the new one should be £100-150 more.
#28
Well, rec'd the cheaper one from MORE and it's got a NVidia 310M in it :(:(:(
#29
If these have the 330M Graphics, they will be superb, I know the cheaper one has the 310M, but the argos one is different I believe. It has a bigger HDD for starters.

I can say that the Samsung laptops are awesome, they come with full versions of Windows on discs and then another disc with all the drivers and bloatware, which you can choose to exclude from the installation!!

Hot for me, but if someone reserved one from argos, can you let us know what chip it had in it? I am waiting for them to come back into stock locally and will go get!
#30
I think the Argos one'll have a 310 in it tbh :/

It'd be great if I was proved wrong.

The confusion in the spec list probably arises from the cpu being a '330M'.

I am thinking this also, the thing is, on the cover page for the R580, samsung used the codename for the 330M - But when you go into the specs, it says the 310M - But there are variations, im sure they are not just the hard drive being 180GB larger?

Rang Samsung up, the UK JS01 has Intel gfx and the JS02 and JS03 have the 310m. There could be regional differences though, it depends where they were bought in/imported from. The 330m *is* a factory option. I've reserved one at Argos just to take a look at the sticker on the box.

Anyone else bought one yet? Where did you buy it from?

After a little research, I have come up with something else!!!!

There are 3 variations of the laptop.

R580-JS01 which has the core i5 processor, 500gb hard drive and the 330m graphics

R580-JS02 which has the core i3 processor, 500gb hard drive and the 330m graphics

R580-JS03 which has the i3 processor, 320gb hard drive and a 310m graphics chip. I have got this info off the samsung websites. So as the argos one states a 500gb hard drive, we may be in luck and it may have the 330m graphics. Please let me know if you get one, I will be buying one!!

Hey,
I stumbled across this forum before buying my R580 and I've now got one so I thought I'd help try to clear up any confusion.
I bought it from Argos by the way.
It has: Intel i3 processor
4Gb DDR3
Windows 7 32bit (although 64bit drivers are on the website so I'll be reinstalling and using them sometime)
NVIDIA 310M -Definately!
500gb hard drive.
Its the R580-JS02...

Ive been playing Far Cry 2 all afternoon on high settings at the native resolution and it handles that perfectly so it's not too bad, and it is a rather sexy looking laptop, im happy :)

Hope that helps!

That does help!! Dammit!! I want it to play MW2 thats the problem. Dont know if it will play that ok. ?? - Anyways, it does look sexy I must admit. But I dont know if its worth it now hmmmm

Argos one deffo has 310m.

:(

Wanted to upgrade from my 8600M GT!
#37
please someone clear up this confusion.

Some posts are saying the 330m is the GPU and the most recent post about the argos unit say it came with a 310m and seems very happy with that fact.

Which is best the 310m or 330m ? surely its the 330m thats the one to get no???

how about this one, worth getting?

I am really gutted about this to be honest with you, :(

310 it must be judging by the people who have gone to argos to check.

I think the js02 is the only model for sale right now, on the samsung site on the r580 specs page it only has the specs for the js02.. The 330m gpu is better yes but there is no r580 with the 330m gpu
yet.. That one at more computers will have the 310m gpu..
A friend has a couple of copies of cod mw2 so I may borrow one and try it out.. Been wanting to play it anyway..
#40
Well, as I mentioned above, the 330m is a factory fitted option. Which factory and to which market they're sold in, only a higher presence knows. Seems the UK has got the bum deal this time though as any one of the R580's I've found on sale have the 310m in - both of the models at More and the one at Argos. I don't know about the ones at 'Save on Laptops' - I can only say that with both models on sale there (JS02UK and JS03UK) being the same as those on More that they'll only have the 310m in, too.

For those looking deeply into this, there is an alternative. There are a few laptops out there that have an ATi 5650 card which provides similar if not more 3d grunt as the 330M (I've found only one 3dmark06 "result" for the 330M).
