I phoned them and got an ansaphone. Never heard of them, I have dealt with Laptop Direct and they are excellent and they answer the phone. Plus with quidco on Laptops Direct you get your delivery back in the form of the 2%.

Eventually got an answer from them and they comfirmed FREE postage at the moment and in stock.

Only dealt with them from yesterday as buying myself. Was very impressed. Obviously a small company but picked up first time and offered free delivery on the Samsung R20 T5500 which was under the £500 mark (£489).

Receiving tomorrow so will let you know the result.

How about Tesco Direct http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-5188.aspx £669.96 with 3% quidco (about £20) and 669 clubcard points. There is a free delivery code kicking around and maybe a £5 of code as well.

please do, it's only a few pounds difference so some might think spending nearly £700 on a laptop might be a better deal through a larger, well known company. Although for next day its a great price.

I'm sorely tempted to buy this but Dell and Empire Direct have a hold on a large chunk of my cash on my credit card (from the cancelled/out of stock orders) for the next few days.
#7
Know how you feel - I lost out on the Sony Vaio as well and Empire still deducted the money!!!

Will post result as it is nice to see a small company competing with some of the big boys and I could not find a better price for the model I wanted - Samsung R20 LMW T5500. Must be fate as I do think the Samsung looks far sexier (IMO).

This is the new Samsung laptop with the newest Intel mobile CPU "Santa Rosa" and the new Direct X 10 Nvidia graphics card. The older CPU models (including Intel Core 2 Duo) will become much cheaper in the next few weeks, since the retailers are trying to get rid of them.
On eBuyer this item has been sold out since a week now; they sold 120+ laptops in just a few days.

I can never wait for these things to charge

Don't tempt me!

You could have removed the battery before using it... I'm sure a laptop battery does not have a memory these days anyway, still best not to bother it on its initial charge anyway.
#13
I know what you mean - it's one of those "it will probably be okay BUT" things. There is a button you can press on the battery that gave a reading of 80% but not taking any chances. The battery on my last laptop was terrible - in the end it only lasted about 15mins so not risking it. Biting my finger nails though!!

P.S. How long do you reckon for an initial charge? I think about 8 hours should do it?
#14
I think you can use it while it is charging, it should just carry on but at a lesser rate, I understand your concerns though. 8 hours sounds fine,

just to be a stickler santa rosa isn't the CPU but the intel internal code for the 4th gen version of the intel centrino platform (core 2 cpu, 965 chipset and 4965 wireless lan).

to be a true intel centrino a notebook must have all three INTEL components

in real world terms, better throughput, better battery life, better onboard gfx capability and longer range wireless capability.

and yes, expect price reductions over the coming months on units using combinations of the 2006 napa platform (core duo/core 2 duo, 945 chipset and 3945 wireless)

if you want to future proof and can afford it then santa rosa is the way to go

laptops direct offer an optional predelivery check for £39.97 which..
" We rigorously test your laptop for a range of common problems so that your laptop can be up and ready to go when you receive it. Our comprehensive examination makes sure that you have no dead or permanently lit pixels and that any software bought with the machine is fully installed.

* Guarantee of no dead or permanently lit pixels.
* All critical updates installed to keep your computer healthy and safe from attack.
* If you purchase Antivirus software, such as Norton or F-Secure, we will install and configure this together with all the latest updates.
* If you purchase Office Software, or other software such as Nero, we will install and update this too.
* If your laptop develops a hardware fault within 7 days , we will collect it free of charge and replace it with a new one . We will also conduct the same pre-delivery inspection on the replacement.
* Please note: Process takes up to 48 hours. Your chosen delivery time will commence after this "

I know its an option but TBH it puts me off buying from them as I think it may increase your chance of getting a stuck pixel etc if you don't pay for the pre delivery check.

When will Wireless N be coming standard with laptops ?

You think that they will send you one of the ones they found with a few dead pixels? TBH I don't like the idea of someone messing around with the laptop before I get it. I prefer to break the seal myself.

I fancied an R70 until I read that not all of the Santa Rosa features have been implemented on this laptop, I'll wait until there's a laptop with ALL the features of Santa Rosa.

Just wait till you have a problem and then see what you think of them. Worst customer service manner ever then:whistling:

If the seal is already broken, don't accept (manufacturers will say this) it.

I do wonder what they do to the ones that they find with dead pixels, but I'm sure the retails can't reseal boxes - maybe they are sold on as reconditioned?

I think they still haven’t agreed the N specification yet but you can buy laptops with the Draft N specification which in some cases will be upgradeable to the final version.

The Nvidia 8400M is not a strong mobile GPU for games, you need the 8600M GT for that, so don’t buy this for games.
