nice find ive been looking for a new hard drive
#2
That's a very good price for that hard drive, I noticed you have to select delivery "within 5 days" to get it free.

Thinking about it - would really like a cheap 750 GByte drive, but is tempting
#3
great deal on this specific hard drive. It would be too much for any other hard drive but this samsung is apparently the dogs ...

I have 1TB in external memory but would like a cheapish 500gb internal. 56.99 is still a bit much for "me" to be honest !! Wondr why these arent plummeting in prices yet ...

I think its to keep the 750\1000GB drives at a high price. They haven't really gone down much at all since they've been released a year ago, especially the 1TB ones.

Guess they don't wanna make the gap between the 500GB and them too high otherwise they wouldn't shif many at all.

Prices being artificially high on the +500GB drives if you ask me.

Great drive, great price. Samsung drives are fast, quiet and reliable.
#6
prices are high on the 750gb and 1tb drives because they have better technology and had much higher read/write bandwidth.
#7
Good price, and the free delivery is a bonus. Ordered one- heat added and rep added.
#8
was £59.99 when I brought last August, I'm using it as a storage drive and still have 300GB left :)
#9
Been after this exact model for a couple of months now and had to buy it at that price. great find. by the way its £56.99 now
#10
Low price as its not a Western Digital or Seagate but chepo Samsung.

Its a drive for people who build on budget.
#11
Excellent drive topped many benchmarks. (I went for the WD 500gb AAKS which has similar performance for slightly more)

Voted hot.

Been using them for a few years now and I bought based on spec not price.

Not at all. It's more to do with the fact that large manufacturers like Dell, HP,Lenovo and co aren't putting these large drives into their PC's just yet so Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung aren't manufacturing these drives in high enough numbers numbers to get manufacturing costs down.

Totally agree - it's the best 500Gb drive out there, especially at this price.

Though it maybe one of the last I'll buy, as solid state models are expected soon , see

http://www.crucial.com/uk/promo/index.aspx?prog=ssd - but no doubt at a premium initially ......

still using 160GB and im an avid gamer. Really should get one of these babies.

Yep at scarily high prices initially and quite low capacities, but s'pose it's the same with most brand new technologies

I bought one of these a couple of months back after my WD 500GB drive killed itself after only 3 months, taking 500GB of precious data with it.

The new samsung is noticably quieter, less warm and quicker all round. Don't be fooled by names of brands - this drive is excellent IMO.

I had a samsung die on me a few years back when 6.4GB was "extreme" (I've had a drive from every manufacturer go on me now, but WD was the quickest at 3 months, beating maxtor's previous 12 month record) but this samsung has totally restored my faith.

Definately worth a shufty.

Mate its obvious to me that you dont know much. maybe you should read some reviews before posting comments.

I love these drives. Have 3 of them ;p

Different drives have their strong point and their weak points. However, these have some of the best read/write speeds in their class. They keep cool and are quieter than most other HD's I have used. There is definitely a reason why I keep buying these!

Was almost tempted to get another, but I think I can wait till the rest fill up ;p

Agree with you.

I bought this drive last year (July) for £67.

Completely agree. These Spinpoint drives regularly get A-listed in PC Pro (this one has been A-listed for months).

One review:
http://www.custompc.co.uk/labs/114085/samsung-spinpoint-t166-hd501lj.html

Full spec of drive:
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/spec.do?group=computersperipherals&type=harddiskdrives&subtype=spinpointtseries&model_cd=HD501LJ&fullspec=F

I looked into these drives when I was considering buying a Raptor, and in quite a few benchmarks, the Spinpoint does as well as the Raptors.

Quiet, quick and cheap.

It'll be years and years before you find yourself putting an SSD in your PC and it'll still be quite expensive.

http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_6273.html

7+ quid for a gb.

Or with the hard drive in this offer it's 11p per Gb. So it's about 70 times the price of conventional magnetic storage.

I doubt "normal" users will have SSD's in their PC's within the next 5 years purely based on cost.
#24
I have two of these babies raided and they're great. 3 months still going strong. Might get another as spare.
#25
Great drive to upgrade capacity on a Sky HD box too
#26
I have one, my brother has one - highly recommended. Have a firewire/usb SATA caddy with the samsungs running on firewire 400, cool and quiet even underload and very fast.
My old desktop has a 5 year old 160GB samsung spinpoint, still runs very well. (fingers crossed).
My hitachi deskstar 400GB recently died after only 5 months of minimal usage as was used to store my movie collection. It would get too hot and nasty clicking/crunching noises from day one of purchase.
