I ordered a seagate which was rubbish.
Hitachis seem to be useless too.
Some people have had problems with WD hard drive

I've heard good things about Samsung spinpoints and I use a samsung myself. Quiet, cool and fast. Heres a great deal on a 500gb one.

Only 36 in stock - be quick !!

I can't find it on the ebuyer site.

This came out top in the latest Custom PC labs test on hard drives which is in the current issue for those that want to read it. It is stupidly quick and awesome value per GB. I've not checked around to see if this is a good deal though.

WRONG.

this is the reason im after a samsung. Ordered the so called top of the class hard drive and it was absolute rubbish !!
#12
The Seagate drive is recommended and sold by Dell as a add-on drive, so it cannot be that bad! Many people bought this drive and reported no problems with it, except you. I guess you just had bad luck! ;-)

seagate ARE top of the line, you're single bad experience doesn't negate their true worth i'm afraid....even if you use capitals :p

hard disk quality doesn't differ much among brands, there might be slightly better ones.. but i doubt one will notice it
#15
I agree with the above poster, difference in quality is largely unnoticable. In regards to the other posters, Seagate was top of the class, but this drive has been beating it in all the benchmarks, as another poster said, came top in CustomPC, and many others, definitely the best 500gb on the market for performance and value

gotta disagree strongly with that assesment, if you're talking pure performance then the different between the top and bottom might not be vast but difference in reliability and support does differ alot.

samsung might have come out with a slightly faster drive than than the seagate 7200.10 but they don't have a 5yr warranty or the same historical level of reliability either. Apart from the warranty samsung are up there with seagate and WD for my top3 drive makers though.

its not only me.
a user "ditto" had same problem. im sure others did too but didnt speak up on the forums. Seagate are good but this "top of the class" drive in particular is pants.

One great thing about Samsung's SpinPoint drives is their noise - they are damn near silent and run pretty cool. Less heat = less need for cooling, which also = less noise from fans that need to run faster. I've got a Samsung Spinpoint 250gb in here at the moment (which was also rated very highly by CustomPC iirc) and it's great.

There might be a couple of other drives available for a few bob cheaper, but, coupled with performance, heat, noise etc... I don't think there's anything better out there atm :)

Got two Samsung SpinPoint drives in the current rig, a 40gb (from August 2001) and a 160gb. Until now I have never found more reliable drives - guess that's why last week I bought a 400gb HD401JL, the same as the one in the thread, minus 100gb...

... guys; thanks for proving samsungs are the best :D

Just ordered one for £64.82 from Ebuyer, with free postage (under 5 days delivery). Let's hope it is as good as everyone says.

I've got 5 spinpoint drives and I can confirm they are very quiet and run cool. I've never had a problem with one.
