I saw a deal for a 2TB external hard drive for £129.99 on hotukdeals, then I thought i'd look and see if here were any better deals. This is a 1.5tb external hard drive that I found on play.com, seems like a great deal!

The Amazon one has a picture with an esata port (but it's not the version they are selling) anyone know where to buy the version with both esata & USB?

I bought this from play.com about a month ago for £84.99 - it just has USB. For what it's worth, it's worked very well so far, and I like the little white light at the bottom of the hard drive, it's a very nice touch.

Same price on Amazon now.

It was £85 just two weeks ago. And was about £87 on ebuyer at that time.

I have my eye on this drive and will buy it when it drops again to £85 or less.

Cold from me. Been this price for ages and pretty standard for 1.5tb now. Was £79.99 before christmas.

This isn't an especially great price for it (I've seen it under £80 on occasion). Saying that this seems like a great HD, auto idle mode, nice solid case, physical on/off button on the front, and low energy and noise 5400rpm drive.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the Play.com warranty a pain if you need to use it?

30. All electrical products are covered by a twelve month manufacturer's warranty. If your product develops a fault while under warranty, please contact Play.com and we will advise you where to send it for repair. It is a "return to base" warranty therefore there will be a delivery charge to return the product back to the relevant UK service centre.:w00t:

It depends on what you bought and who the manufacturer is. With some items you'll deal directly with the manufacturer once the 28 days that the retailer is responsible for is over.

For example, I have an LG TV that has developed a fault, LG arranged a courier to come and collect (at no charge) it and will return it once repaired/replaced.

As another example I have a Pinnacle Soundbridge radio that went faulty, the retailer wanted nothing to do with it as it was outside the 1 year warranty they provide. The manufacturer offer a 2 year warranty but I had to pay to ship the unit to Germany for replacement.

I guess the thing behind this is that it can be worth paying extra to buy from manufacturers that will stand behind their products with decent warranty. I won't buy a Pinnacle product ever again (they're out of business anyway) but I would buy LG.

Purchased this drive in October 09 from eBuyer for £88.95 inc delivery.

I am surprised this is still the same price.

The drive is silent. Case is well built with the highest quality finish. I have the drive below the TV, plugged into a Popcornhour media player. The LED is set to minimum and is never a distraction. It will allow the PCH access to 1080p mkvs without any stuttering or noticable dropped frames.

Well worth the money last year but I expect a price drop for 1.5TB drives very soon as 2TB drives are now filtering through.

am i under the impression that these can be stacked?

i might be tempted to buy a few if they can

Sorry guys I wouldn't buy another Samsung drive if it was 10p

I had two 1TB drives go belly up I had only used them for a couple of months each.
In 25 years these were the only drives that failed quickly, so much for SMART????

Both had confidential work on so I couldn't return them. I spent days running various recovery software.
About a wek in total for both drives.

The only stress releif I got was when I got a big fat hammer out a smashed the s**t out of them.

£200 worth of scrap.

buyer beware

Not voted hot or cold as one person on this planet may have a drive that still works.

I reviewed this product here (just in case this helps anyone);

I bought this 6 weeks ago for £79-ish. Excellent drive. Looks and feels better quality than Seagate and Western Digital drives I also own.

I partitioned mine into 3 "drives" and use them for system backups.

I think the samsung f1 1tb drives were prone to fail but the f2 drives like the ones in thishave a 3 year warranty, and run cool and silent, the f3 drives are also well regarded.

I saw a review which said they couldn't be stacked because the top edges are all curved. However, I believe that with a piece of sturdy card or metal placed between the drives, they could be stacked, but I don't have a drive (or two) yet to test this.

Cold I'm sorry. The sweetspot for hard drives is 1TB.

500GB, 1.5TB and 2TB all have less GB per £, so don't make economic sense to buy IMO.
#21
? On external drives I'd say the sweet spot is now 1.5 TB, Pc world 1TB external drives are around £70 but they are selling 1.5TB IO Mega drives for £85 which is 50% more space for only a little more cost.

Er no. 1TB external drives can be picked up for just over £50 these days.
#23
The price at Amazon, and I would much rather buy something from Amazon than from Play.com, as their customer service has become an nightmare (give them a call to try).

No! If you look on HUKD many deals recently have been placed for 1TB drives in the £50 to £60 region, which makes better financial sense than a £90 1.5 TB drive.
#26
Oh deals from history rather than current prices I have quoted from Pc world & Play, maybe you could show me your current 1tb external drives for £50??

£53.99 after 10% off.

The £ per gig difference between a £53.99 1tb and a £89.99 1.5TB is nothing! Most people who are looking at 1.5 tb want them for a reason.
#29
zz petty arguing. Anyways this is a great external, i got 4 of them a few weeks back, really nice design, they stack well and sit nicely. Good speeds, also comes with an on/off switch which is a luxury theses days ! lol Good stuff all round

Is this running off AC power or USB as I'm looking for a portable HD.

I have this external hard drive and it is the best! Buy it, you won't regret it! It's quieter than my computer!
