Manufacturer's Description
Samsung has developed solid, reliable data storage to store your precious memories up to 1.5 TB. The STORY Station safely downloads and protects your lifetime memories – video clips, photos, music files, and important data – that are so valuable and not easily replaced. Samsung STORY Station is the best storage solution to capture and preserve your life story.

Minimalism is the design concept of STORY Station. Every element – thefinely brushed metal finish, simple jog dial, and red-belted cable outlets –underscores the sleek and refined style. The sharp contrast of gray and red is eye-catching and the solid, simple cover creates timeless beauty.A simple but classical jog dial functions as a power switch and reflecting LED light, hidden on the bottom, softly displays power on/off status.

The STORY Station is built to store your valuable data safely and keep it backed up using the Samsung Auto Backup and SafetyKey features. Moreover, you can protect private and confidential files and folders in the virtual drive, SecretZone, with complete confidence.

Samsung’s environment-friendly product supports “Power Saving Mode,” which saves power by automatically going into standby mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. The STORY Station’s heat dissipating design – the ventilation and the aluminum cover – prevents heat buildup and keeps the drive inside cool

Simply plug it in and go. No CD is needed for installation. You can see at a glance how much space is available, used, or designated as backup storage.

My one complaint on this drive for my AV usage with Boxee/Revo setup is that if you pause a film for a period of time, the drive goes into sleep mode. There is then a delay for the drive to start up again. Whilst I would imagine that many applications for this drive would welcome that happening, I find it quite annoying.

Is there a drive out there that does not do this after a period of time?

My Lacie doesn't seem to go into sleep mode unless the driving device goes to sleep/powers down

I have one of these and find the same annoyance as Lyrrad. However it only takes about 5 seconds to get itself going again so it's not much of a problem. It helps save electricity, keep your drive cool, and so prolongs its lifespan

My 1.5TB Western Digital Elements doesn't go into sleep mode whereas as you say the Samsung does - difference being the Western Digital is hot to touch whereas the Samsung stays ice cold ... of course this is for 24/7 pc use and you may be happier going with the Western Digital Elements for your needs ...

Have you looked into the app 'HDDCoffee'?

This is a good deal, ther were around £90 not so long ago. Have some heat.

Anyone know (forgive noob question) if i can leave this plugged into usb all the time, and on? Just letting it start up and shutdown when computer starts and shuts down? Or do I have to start seprately each time, and 'safely remove' each time.
#14
You can leave it running for as long as you like. When you shutdown your PC with USB devices in the drive they are automatically disconnected safetly before Windows closes. Personally I have 3 USB Drives plugged into my Revo PC and they stay on 24x7 unless I do any maintenance / updates on my PC that require a restart.
+ Heat on this as this is a great little box. I use it for backup storage only as my other drives hold the video content, so I don't really mind the sleep issue, and HDDCoffee seems an awsome little addon.

Was looking to buy an external drive for storing pics and vids and just wanted to know if with these external drives, although it says you can connect it via usb, do you always have to plug into mains socket for powering the HDD and THEN use usb for the data transfer, or is it like some of those 'portable' WD drives where the usb prvides the power? reason i ask is coz i'll need to use it on a laptop and whilst travelling sockets are not always available?

Thanks..
#16
You'll have to plug it in to the mains separately for power.

thanks for that macleodmac,

might have to pass on this then. heat added for the offer though..

Top man. hddcoffee works perfectly with Win 7 64bit. That was a really annoying nag for me.

You may be able to get a little script runs on the background on your Revo that periodically prods the drive and prevents it from sleeping. Is there a Boxee/Revo forum or something? They may know more.

EDIT: Ah, I see someone has posted just such a script!

Most hard drive failures occur at startup or shutdown, so I doubt it prolongs the lifespan...
