Excellent player back in stock.
The screen is only 2.7in, so it may be too small for some, and it does not have an SD slot..
The key aspect of this media player is that it will play SD avi files without re-encoding, and it has composite TV out.. Will play content from BBC iPlayer, if needed.

it looks interesting but the reviews/comments from owners are not exactly fantastic. I think if I got one of these I would end up wishing I had spent more (ok, just over twice the amount) on an ipod touch as it has a bigger screen, apps/games and a better UI.
#6
Not bad for the price but could do with a bigger screen and wifi
#7
Yes I ordered this last week at this super price via Amazon, unfortunately paid £53.29 inc DEL...
HOT!

Well I guess this is for people who dont want to spend twice as much.....

There are just too many media/mp3 players out now.

I am finding that everything is being merged into an iphone monopoly...
Hopefully the new iphone this summer rocks. I wouldnt mind getting that to replace the phone and the ipod i keep in my pocket right now.
#10
very tempted but really i just want a small mp3 player of this capacity to save me lugging my archos 605 wifi around with me.

Was also tempted by the ZEN mosaic yesterday - would have been perfect except was only 2gb :[

I'd say spend a bit more money and get a Cowon S9.

This is of course assuming you want to do something crazy like listen to music on an MP3 player, and in that sense want it to sound good.

iPods are all well and good but their sound quality is just ok... The main thing I do is listen to music so that's priority for me.

So yes there are loads about but its worth looking at them all.
#12
Its ok, but the reason they are getting rid of them is because they have been superceded. I'd want bigger screen and more memory. Yes i'd pay for it. Just try one out first, think its a good deal if you cna get round that delivery charge.
#13
seems quite old i looked on amazon and it said date first available 1st july 2006

Spend a bit more? You'll be lucky to get an S9 for under £150 unless you go second hand.
And your second comment would imply the Samsung has inferior sound quality, when in fact it is excellent, I'd say on a par with good Sony/Cowon players to be honest (not based on hearsay, I have a YP-P3 which this has replaced, and compared sound quality with a friends S9 and Sony X series).

This is a great deal.

Here's the low down from the WHICH? test of this model which it did score as a Best Buy.

The Samsung YP-R1 is a great portable media player and a clear Which? Best Buy. Though it’s tricky to find, as it’s not widely stocked, it’s definitely worth tracking down.

The YP-R1 is a mid-range player that’s been priced to compete with players such as the Apple iPod Nano and Creative's new Zen X-Fi 2. It has a conventional rectangular design with an attractive brushed metal finish and a 2.7-inch touchscreen.

This display is larger than the screen on the Nano, but a little smaller than the one on the X-Fi 2. Like the touchscreen on the X-Fi 2 it’s a resistive version. These are cheaper than the capacitive screens found on models such as the iPod Touch, but they tend to be more sticky and less responsive, and you need to press them more firmly. However, unlike the touchscreen on the X-Fi 2, we didn’t experience any problems when using it.

The YP-R1 has a good range of features including Bluetooth connectivity, a TV out for big screen playback, an FM radio with recording option and support for BBC iPlayer downloads. The only thing missing is Wi-Fi connectivity, but you wouldn’t expect it for the price.

Samsung has also included its Beat DJ function. Previously only seen on one of its mobile phones, this software enables budding DJs to add their own voice and sound effects to their music.

The player itself is easy to use, with a clear menu structure, though adding tracks to the player is a little slow, taking 65 seconds to transfer 100MB (about two albums). The supplied headphones sound great and you can listen to most audio file formats (including MP3, WMA and iTunes’ AAC).

The YP-R1’s battery is less impressive. It’s not bad, lasting up to 26 hours, but we’ve seen better (the battery on the Nano lasts up to 35.5 hours). However it does charge up pretty quickly (two hours).

Considering how well equipped it is, this is a pretty lightweight model (51g). Yet it’s still durable. It performed well in our drop test and the screen is resistant to scratches (though the same is not true of the body).

You can view videos on the 2.7-inch screen, set up slideshows of your photos and also play music while you’re viewing them. If you’re really into your movies, however, then we’d recommend that you choose a different model, as the screen is still a little small and it’s reflective in bright light. On the plus side the video player is easy to use, is compatible with most video formats and the running time (four hours) is reasonable.

The Samsung YP-R1 is not Mac compatible.

Pros: Affordable touchscreen, FM radio, great sound quality, easy to use

Cons: Screen a little small for movies and reflective, battery could be better, not Mac compatible

I have the 16GB R1 - fantastic little media player. Sooo portable, plays lots of formats and the sound quality is superior to any iPod (and I've had three iPods before I got this). At that price, for the 8GB one, an absolute bargain. Hot

Glowing review from The Register here, which prompted me to jump ship from Apple iPod

The Which review, incorrectly states that Macs are not supported. In fact the player can be configured for MSC mass storage mode, which will work with a Mac.
Can also confirm that you can browse folders. I rarely use playlists, so can't comment on how well this works.

As for iPod touch, aside from being twice the price, size and weight, it does not play avi files.
Aside from Archos and Cowon, I could not find any other players with TV out, that can play 480p avi files. You can of course take your chance with Chinese imports, but from what I can tell, built quality is very poor, no product updates and the Chinese seem to have some very creative marketing departments.

Personally I wanted this primarily for travelling, since my netbook doesn't have TV out, I can copy video files over to the Samsung, when a full size TV is available. So for me the screen size was unimportant.

Sorry, I don't really know. I have seen some people complain about the battery discharging slightly overnight, but I have never see this. The other thing is that the enhanced audio mode (DNSE) uses a lot of processing power. One review, http://mp3.generationmp3.com/2009/12/30/nouveau-firmware-300-pour-le-samsung-rmix-r1/ (in French) indicates that the fw release 3.00 helps out, playing back for 12.5 hrs with DNSE enabled. So you would expect longer than this with it disabled.
Clearly because of the size, battery life suffers, so its just another tradeoff.

Does it allow folder navigation (same structure you create on the pc)? Or is it only via playlists? Also, is it easy to create playlists for it?

I've got this player. At first the battery would discharge after being powered down, but a firmware update sorted this (latest version is now 3.3). You can navigate by folders if you use the "folder" app, but don't think that it does this if you go into the music one. Only ever use mine for video - the screen is too small to enjoy long movies - but is good for TV shows or cartoons like Futurama. Keeps my nephews quiet when we're out too. Bought the TV-Out cable from ebay for a tenner - it works really well - and intend to use this to watch movies when on holiday. One thing I like is being able to lock the touchscreen, but still be able to alter the volume using the physical keys. If using for movies, the 16gb one would probably be better.

Its a 4 way 3.5mm jack to 3 phono (yellow,red,white)

wiring as follows
1 (Closest to jack body) - Ground
2 - Video (yellow)
3 - Audio Left (white)
4 (tip of jack) - Audio right (red)
The cables commony used for camcorders will not work because the wiring is different, see http://pinouts.ru/Home/av_jack_pinout.shtml
Good luck!

I use playlists a lot, and the answers to the question so far haven't been very conclusive. I don't care so much about folders. But can I create playlists on this?
Thanks!
