poor write iops on those drives

Ok for the price but very very poor write operations per second hence why on that benchmark bogrole, linked to, you saw some awful 4k write speeds

high iops are great for reading lots of small files (directories) thumbnails etc ..

Look at the reviews (not the rating), there was a big controversy with component bait & switch in the V300 where it was essentially downgraded after becoming popular.
