Solved it by converting all songs into MP3 again using freemake audio converter

it's a bit smaller than a matchbox, (and I'm not talking Swan Vesta) so yep, size could be an issue.
Isit really to do with the headphones, or does the actual mp3 player play a part?, I want a good quality player, but not too expensive, i'm thinking around £60 or less.

You can install Rockbox on it (custom firmware) for extra features including scrobbling support. I Rockboxed my Sansa e260 and it's great, never had any issues!

The audio quality usually depends on how good your headphones are, but ofcourse a bad-sounding player can ruin it. If you're not using really expensive headphones, the sound quality of the Clip+ will not let you down.
Voted hot btw! I've been a happy owner of Clip & Clip+ for years.
For those wondering about this device, it's not your usually cheap MP3 player. It's very well regarded amongst the both the devout and the objective audiophile/enthusiast. Some interesting tests were done on it and it came out shining:
