hot, great little mp3 players
#2
I have one of those, it works OK.

It is great for recording (mp3s are fine too, not so sure on the radio).

Good price for 8GB (nearly the same as for 2 or 4 GB!!!) - this one used to be around £50 a few months ago.

I should also mention that I wanted a second one, but the one I received did not work properly. the replacement was defective too. I wonder if I should try again now, my first one is still going strong!!!

still, hot!

ordered again. Thanks, raspberry!

Picked up the 4GB version of this for £24.97 at Currys a few weeks ago, and was very surprised but the audio quality

These seem to me, to have better playback than past Ipod models I have owned, and at a fraction of the price

Spend the money you saved buying one of these, as opposed to an overpriced Ipod, on a good set of headphones, and you're laughing

Love the fact that they have a micro sd slot, gives you the oppotunity to upgrade these to 40gb if you need to

Regarding expandability using the microSD slot make sure you read this review:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R3DHE98MAOMQ90/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R3DHE98MAOMQ90

A;though you can do it, the player is only able to recognise a limited number of songs on the microSD card and you might struggle to get it to recognise even an extra 8GB of music. That's a big disappointment for me but by all other accounts a fantastic little player.

I got this at christmas at the same price but from Currys, shot up back to nearer the £50 mark after that, well worth it though.

Only downside I've had is playlists perhaps it's 'me' rather than the machine, but creating playlists on the computer and syncing them over doesn't work so well in the default usb setting, I've had to switch to MTP to have any joy and then it works perfectly fine. Audiobooks are well looked after if you switch from a book to music, turn off even, when you go back you can resume from where you left off.

I personally love it .

That might be true for the OGG format, but I currently have over 7500 mp3's loaded onto my 4GB with a 16gb card installed, all of which are viewed by the player

Voted hot, I have the 4GB one and think it's great.

Tip: if you think it is too quiet, go into the settings and change the volume from "normal" to "loud" - it goes a lot louder then! This option is apparently removed if you update to the latest EU firmware.

The Sansa Clip and Clip+ are well known to have some of the best audio quality of any MP3 players see: http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2007/10/sandisk-sansa-clip-review.php .

iPods in comparison have pretty rubbish audio quality which is definitely not in line with their price. Apple are good at user interfaces, but generally their products are massively overpriced for what they actually do.

the fact that the site is called 'anything but ipod' suggests that they have already made up their minds on whether ipods are any good- and as such cannot be relied upon for objective assessment.

Found the same £39.99 deal at Curry's @The Point in Bracknell today (although the list price there was £44.99 not the current Amazon £119.99 !)
Alas, for folks in Bracknell, I picked up the last one.

Note that there's a firmware update for this product - goto http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/300/sno/0

And when you do the firmware upgrade best to select "North America" or "Rest of the World" as your location of the firmware limits the volume output in accordance with EU regulations (though you can change setting later).

Ordered on on Feb 14th when saw offer on offeroftheday. Took a couple of days to arrive.
Worked great for me so far (touch wood). I just drag and drop my CD rips as flac files on PC; no need to convert to mp3.

Possible issues for some folk :
Don't think it does gapless mp3
It uses the title tag to determine the order in which files will be played by default; not something more obvious like filename. You can use software like mp3tag to get the default playback order to what you want or (more sensible option) create a playlist (lots of programs to do this).
Smallness (and smallness of screen) may make it less user friendly than some options. Also not much room in there for a big long life battery.
Some folks have complained that the minimal volume on the radio it too high (maybe they need to set the player location to Europe ;-)).

So there are some quirks but it does have a great reputation for sound quality (check the headfi site).

I have the 4gb one and its so neat, tiny and lots of nice features, recommend them to anyone.

The LOUD setting is only available for US area. Europe ver does not have it. BUT reset the device and set your ver to US, then you will get full functionality. Checked on Sansa Fuze.
#15
I bought one of these from Amazon a couple of weeks ago and am really impressed with it.

Changed the headies for some Creative EP630's...sounds not bad at all. Even better lying in bed with my Senny HD280's.

Excellent price for one of the best mp3 players on the market. H+R!

i think it can recognise upto 6000 songs at the moment but they release new firmware every 3 months it aint a problem they will release a fix for it when the 32gb comes out

Got the 24.97 deal from Currys too, great little player, real long battery life.

When I bought my 4GB clip last month the loud setting was unlocked, so unless the 8GB is different (or mine was old stock or something) then the firmware it ships with has the loud setting available in the options; it is just if you manually update to the new European firmware that you lose the setting.

Thanks for posting this deal. I've been after something small and compact to use whilst jogging without sacrificing much in the sound department.

Rockbox are currently working on this player too!!
#21
Bought the 8gb model in December. Music quality is very good with a decent pair of earphones. Big bonus for me is that the software makes special provision for podcasts and audiobooks, keeping them separated from my music.. It will resume an audiobook or a podcast where l last left off. I occasionally use it at bedtime for listening to the daily Archers podcast (sad i know) - it even has a sleep timer if you happen to doze off. Factor in the microsd card slot for expandibility (it incorporates the microsd content into the listings) and it the Clip+ is a great little package. Highly recommended.

Personally I don't think you'll be sacrificing anything in the sound department. Next to my Sony X Series mp3 player, for sound quality the Clip came in an extremely close second! Apple take note...

While yeah the only 'volume options' in the settings is either 'normal' or 'high' and even high isn't quite... loud, there's a volume control button on the side which pretty much overrides the need to use the system settings. Unless I'm missing something, using the volume switch cranks it up real loud.

The EU regulations for volume settings normally doesn't give the option for 'high' in settings menus. This would indicate that the player ships with Worldwide firmware. If you ever update to new EU firmware when it gets released then it's likely you won't have the 'high' option, meaning you would have a lower overall maximum volume setting. This is not designed as a method to alter the volume but just to 'protect' ears of Europeans; silly really!! I've probably not explained that properly but i'm sure someone else will come along who will or you can google and find more information. :)

I seem to recall something about the EU wishing to protect our poor little ears. That explained it well, lower overall maximum volume makes perfect sense.
#26
as above- no gapless playback so your ripped, mixed CDs dont' sound that great on it. Nice sound quality otherwise though
#27
I'm one of the geezers who bought one from Amazon within last few weeks. After charging it with the supplied USB cable and detaching from PC, I selected Europe for region. With Creative Aurvana Live! headphones (pretty efficient for full-size models and a hotukdeals prompted purchase :-D) I found I needed to set the volume control to full for just about acceptable output. I think I recall the "Loud" setting was visible but not setable from the menus.

Doing the recommended firmware upgrade and selecting North America (I think Rest of World is OK too) solved this. The Europe setting might actually be the better setting for users of very high efficiency in ear monitors, since I gather some users have complained the minimum volume on the radio is too high (not for me).

I believe gapless works with flac files.

Well they don't review ipods (they might like them, you never know) but boy do they know their audio. Actually try reading beyond the title!

I've just received mine. Put it this way, you know know that it's not an customer return judging by how much you have to massacre the plastic to get to the player!!

I can't believe the sound quality from such a small device. I found that tweaking the custom EQ made it sound a little better with my running earphones which are slightly on the tinny side.

Mine arrived today, and i'm very happy with it. :)

It's tiny with great sound!

As for the packaging?!:?

Can anyone tell me whether it's possible to turn the shuffle mode on/off with just one click? It's a feature I love on my iriver and I'm not sure I could do without it.

You're right that they'd be biased... but then every tech site out their admits iPod usually comes last out of any audio quality test. Sony's usually on top if I remember correctly. So basically your argument's moot :p.

Thanks. Can't have everything from such a cheap and tiny player I suppose but that kills it for me as I wanted it for car use and I like to turn random on/off when i get to an album I feel like listening to. Rep left for your help.
