Great little device, well worth £100 to anyone who is after a portable music player and much better quality than the equivalent nano.

It depends what you're after - this is a nano competitor, so ideal for someone who wants small, functional and flash-based.

Great - thanks Mike, I have been thinking about getting one of these, this is just the persuasive argument I need :-)

Don`t fancy a pink one tho lol. They have the black one for £175.06,so i guess it must be to shift the pink ones.

I Hate You Mike T :x

lol only messing, grrr i am sooo tempted to buy one of these and replace my ipod nano

is the sound quality better on these than the ipod nano?

is the sound louder??

I wonder how these compare to the new Sony Walkman players - they seem to have had very good reviews.:)
#13
I just picked up a very cheap iAudio X5 else I would be so tempted with this! Is had excellent reviews and with this 2gb MicroSD card you can expand the memory to 10GB. The icing on the cake would be Ogg Vorbis support but can't have everything.

These are great machines - our oldest has the 4gb version of this.

These are flash based devices whereas the Vision M's have hard drives and are therefore more inclined to die if dropped.

I'm very, very tempted.

If this gets a few more recommendations, I'll take the plunge.
My 1GB Sansa has been brilliant, but not enough room anymore.

8GB - roughly how many songs?
Is it a very good price at £99.99?

Well, when you consider the average 2GB player cost around £50...

Working on an average bitrate of 128kbps... 6 days, 5 hours, 7 minutes, 50 seconds or 198 albums at an estimated 45 minutes per album.

It's a great price, cheapest I saw it otherwise was dabs at around £116.
#22
I really like the design of these, and a very good brand
#23
If I wasn't so wrapped up with touch wheels and iTunes integration I would jump on this. That's a big flash player for the moolah.

As for sound quality, in this price range I would say it's much of a muchness. It really depends on your personal taste rather than measuring oscilloscope captured wave patterns and analysing frequency responses, especially with the branded low to medium end of mp3 players.

Of course, personal bias can magically make anything better than anything else, no science required!

Hot.

I decided to go for it, I was originally looking at a Samsung player but it didn't have mass storage support. I ended up at the Sansa as I believe it does work just as a usb mass storage device, I tried one of the creative players but it really bugged me not being able to just drag and drop files independent of the OS and software.

Only real annoyance is that it lacks the FM tuner of the US version.

got mine today morning and played with it for 2 minutes before work

nice bit of kit and its got a cool light around the scroll wheel

now i need to put tracks on it and compare it with my ipod to see which is better

does anyone know if amazon will accept a return if the box is opened?

ive opened the usb charger packet carefully and took the plastic off the player very carefully and should get that back on without it looking opened but the box came in see through plastic cling film which i cant put back on.

will amazon take it back??

Remember to let us all know how you get on with these please.

Mine arrived today, switched it over to MSC mode and now it's happily working as a USB device. Just transferring some music over to it - size is good and looks fine although the back of it seems to get marked easily with moisture. The screen is bright and colourful but I'm not keen on the scroll wheel or interface - I don't like scroll wheels generally and this one isn't great, it doesn't turn that smoothly. The interface, as with too much of this device is trying too much to be an Ipod which I'd rather it didn't.

I'm being a bit hard on it though, with mp3 players I just like it simple - I just want to browse the file system and work from there. I'm definitely pleased with it and hopefully it will stop my workmates moaning about me using my Archos 504 as an mp3 player!

This is a common problem with this machine - just click and hold the menu button on the lower left for 15 seconds and it should reset itself. You can also try reflashing the unit with the US software which will then also let you use the inbuilt FM radio which Sandisk disabled as it wouldn't pay the European licence fee
#30
Do you have any more details on this? I'd love to get the radio on mine if possible.

John

just checked the sound quality and the volume on mine against my ipod nano

the ipod nano is louder definately but the sandisk has a little better sound quality imo. the volume is the big difference for me as i listen to the nano full volume nearly all the time.

its a nice mp3 player though, small, not as thin as the nano but still very thin, put my memory card into it and it scans the tracks for a few seconds and then displays them normally.

tried to update the firmware but it came with the latest version.

build quality is good, gets a few marks on the back even when you hold it normally from your sweat.

im going to give it back as i normally keep my ipod in my pocket and can change the track and adjust the volume while its there but with the sandisk i cant adjust the volume at all while in my pocket.

overall a very nice mp3 player imo but not suitable for my needs tbh, might have kept it if the volume was louder and i could change the volume while it was in my pocket.

i need to save my money so its best if i giv it back lol

hopefully amazon give full refunds or its going on ebay

What earphones are you using? Doing a comparison of two players with crap (included) earphones would be completly useless.

You manage to listen at full volume with CX-300's?, you must have bullet-proof hearing. I have to turn my mp3 player down since buying some. I think they are very loud earphones, probably because of the intra-aurel design.
#35
lol yeh i listen to it full most of the time as it blocks out everything

im young so thats probably why i can listen to it at full volume.

but they are very very loud, 1-3 tracks out of 300 i have to turn down abit

#36
If you flash the player with US firmware, you can apparently boost the volume although you don't get the radio sadly - the radio option appears but doesn't work.

If it had the option to simply browse the file system and play the music from there I'd be happy but that's something you don't get on most players these days so I'll have just to live with it and try and encode my music properly!

#37
hmm, if i flash it with the US firmware will amazon find out if i send it back or can i just flash it back to the UK firmware?

and how will i go about flashing it to the US firmware?

regards
#38
You replace the two version files (version.sdk and version.txt) in the root of your Sandisk drive then it will update with US firmware from what I've read. I've no idea if you can flash it back to EU firmware using the same procedure.

I've no idea how picky Amazon are about returns, mine seem to have quite a few seals on it to take off before I could use it (particularly the one on the screen).

John
#39
yeh i took the screen protector thing on the screen off carefully cos i thought i might give it back, il read up on it but the big thing is changing the volume and track while its in my pocket so i think il probably give it back

regards
#40
Is it easy to replace the battery like the ipod?

The only thing holding me back is the sound not being as powerful as the ipod. I can't even hear my creative zen on the tube it is so weak whereas my ipod is perfect.
