Either Novatech have made a massive error on their eflyer, or they have not yet put this online (they open at 9AM today). If this is the case then it has finally hit the price sweet spot for me and I am going to order.

Please don't vote cold until it is proven either way. I currently can't find it, but I think it is plausable they haven't put it up yet as there are no other cards at that price.

I will post back as soon as I get confirmation either way but thought some other people might want to get the jump on this too.

If I have an NVIDIA 8800GT 1GB can I justify the upgrade? Is it worth it?

Also How loud is this graphics card?

Graphics card is LOUD ... I'm changing to a GTX280 in the hope it's quieter.

But I have to admit the power of the card for the price is great, GTA IV works well. I only have the 512mb version though so it's not as good as the 1GB.

what is wrong with a loud card, i prefer my fans runing fast so as they run cooler

I have this card and it's inaudible even under heavy load. It was my reason for buying this specific model.

There is nothing wrong with a loud card, but there are people like me that just don't like them. I use my PC for gaming as well as watching movies. So a loud card for me is very annoying when you are watching a movie I rather pay a bit extra for a quiet one.
My graphics cards have been the quiet types, and ATI RADEON 1950 PRO ULTIMATE with a ZALMAN fan, then a HIS 3850 PRO TURBO and the latest one and current one is a Palit 1GB 8800GT. I like a quiet rig ZALMAN case, ZALMAN CPU fan, etc. etc.

Whe you say inaudible is it because you can't hear the graphics card at all? or could it be that because your CPU fan is an standard one then you don't notice the extra noise

How loud would you say ? If you were to watch a movie, DIVX on your PC or simply browse the web would it be annoying?

Does anybody know how does this compare against a 8800GT?

it would pee all over it apparently

The cooler is a Thermaltake Big Typhoon, which is regarded as being relatively quiet with its stock fan. I've lowered this to just 1300rpm. If I disconnect the case fans, and just have the cpu cooler running, I can't hear the graphics card over it. I'll also point out that my card is heavily overclocked and never gets particularly hot.

One strange characteristsic it does exhibit, if it ever reaches 60oC while gaming, it gives the GPU a couple of seconds burst of air. This you can hear!

It sounds like petermerritt's card is overheating for some reason. Could have been unlucky and got a duff one.

Rubbish, it was apparently a mistake (traffic grabber). May be a couple more weeks before they actually hit this level :(

It is VERY loud when playing games, sounds like a vacuum going ;) - I don't have a hot pc either, it's a HP XW4600 Workstation with very well designed cooling.

Card isn't noisy when browsing web / non-intensive graphics. I'm running it on XP so not sure if the Vista eye candy would make it noisier, I doubt it.

Simply don't believe what you are saying, you are either wrong or your card thermometer is wrong and your GPU is burning :D

There is no way on earth your card is even idling at 60 degrees, read ANYWHERE on the web about 4870s and temperatures, they run hot. Period. - even with the new heatpipe HSF. They're good cards though.

asandino : Yes I like quiet pcs too, my 4870 was an upgrade to my XFX 7950GT (Factory passive!) so I could play the likes of GTA IV.

The 4870 is very noisy when playing games, but quite acceptable for films ... I don't really use my pc for films though so it doesn't bother me.

Those temperature graphs at Toms look to be from before Sapphire got around to relaeasing a 4870 with this cooler on.

Here's 16 minutes of nearly 100% GPU load. I can comfortably touch one of the heatpipes after this, so I'm inclined to believe the cards sensor. ;-) As you can see, it's running faster than stock.

Fan speed is a little over 1200RPM - not much noise coming out of it at all.

Idle temperature is about 45 degrees, but the GPU core gets dropped to 500mhz when not being occupied.

Is your card one with this cooler peter? If it's being noisy it's probably not seated right.
