Are you saying a Gt 640 is more powerful?

A GT 640 is not even close to an eqv. HD 7770.

Afraid the 640 is a lot slower. pretty poor card for the money.

Seems like a great value for money card actually, how would this cope with a fully modded skyrim..? My friend has set me the target of a £250 entry gaming pc for a build (linux OS obviously)

The cpu is the killer with skyrim.

Look out for the G3258 and a AsRock H81M-HDS.

This would do the best for the money but obvisuly even high end cards can struggle with a modded skyrim.

Also if on a budget check this out Digital Foundry recommend this.

I have just built a computer in my head which comes to £230 let me know if you want the parts list.

Quite curious about this, doesn't a decent graphics card alone cost upwards of £100?

Depends on what you want something like this car may be more then enough to you to be honest if your used to consoles then this will easily do 30fps on every game. I use one on my living room pc to play Borderlands 2 and Injustice and old total war games.

But something like the R7 260X and R7 265 would probably be enough for most people. These are both below £100.

kind of screaming Nvidia fanboy, gone for the only identical priced N card and said instantly it's more powerful. AMD are always better bang per buck.

The R7's are decent kit for sub £100. AMD's performance-per-pound can't be beaten. Hot

At that price just but 4 cards and use them crossfire.

At that price just but 4 cards and use them crossfire.

The only flaw in doing so being that you still only have 1GB of VRAM no matter how many of them you crossfire together.
Purchasing a single card with larger VRAM would be the better option :{

For a single card configuration though this price is hot

far away from the 7770 but I would definitely spend more for a 2gb of anything else a nearer the 7770 power

please forget 1gb GPU's, 2gb minimum is the standard but higher for the more powerfull cards
I already feel crippled with my 2 r9 290 4gb in crossfire

You're right, the R7 250 isn't as powerful as the HD 7770. Good job this isn't a deal for an R7 250 then, isn't it?

I've put a suggested build up on the AsRock thread, at the time it was good value, might have changed between now and then, and keepitonthelow's build might be even better value for money.

I can tell you this though, if you buy a noctua Hl-12 cooler, don't let anyone tell you its easy to fit. It aint, its a right f*cker on a matx board with a low profile case. Don't bother with the destructions, they're useless.

Luckily its near silent and far better than stock cooler, even with the top fan removed.

It's not a typo... 'Destructions' is the term used for useless instructions supplied with hardware/software.
#23
For the price this is a great deal, but considering a gaming PC in general, I think an extra £40 would be really worth it.

Also for whoever mentioned modded skyrim, if you mean graphics mods you're going to need a high end card if you want to be able to play on any sorta high settings and get a decent fps.

I followed "Skyrim Tuner"'s RealENB guide a while ago and my 7950 couldn't handle all the mods at once.

Are you blind your the second person to do this that is a r7 250 not a 250x completely different. The normal 250 is not even as good as a old HD 7730.

correct, I never guess one. Then even worse, I had 2 x 7770 only for test purposes and because they were on a misprice. Useless as single and worse in crossfire. They were let down by the 1gb VRAM

Really? I had a 7770 for a while (best choice for a low-profile card at the time), and even with only 1GB VRAM it performed pretty well, ran The Witcher 2 maxed settings and Skyrim (vanilla) on high very smoothly.

Obviously there are better cards, but they aren't the same price. If this 250X is at the top end of someones budget, it's the best card for them, unless you can name an alternative that performs better for the price?

Because a Kaveri based APU would not fit into a PCI express slot...

I want to buy either the r7 250x or the Asus Nvidia GeForce GT 640 (2GB DDR3, PCI Express 3.0, VGA, 2x DVI-D, HDMI, Nvidia 3D
Vision Ready)

I want to be able to use 2 monitors. Am i right in saying that the r7 can only support 1 monitor since it only has one DVI port. Which is the better card? thanks in advance.

The R7 support three monitors but if you want to use two just use HDMI and DVI together if your monitors are both DVI just buy a DVI to hdmi connector. The R7 250X is much better then the GT 640 even the GTX 650 is not as powerful as the R7 250X.
