Are the 6 series card really effective in gaming other than better energy consumption and heat dissipation ?

I heard that you could just a buy a cheaper 6950 and put the firmware bios or what ever its called on it from a 6970 and it works the same for a lot less money. If so, is it worth buying 6970 at all?

Some people say that it is not so easy or it is not possible with new generation of 6950s

^Indeed, so it's not a guarentee especially after this long, you take a risk going down that route.
