#4

#5
By the way i voted hot on the basis of what HOTUKDEALS is for, and you cant find this card much cheaper anywhere else

But not in eyefinity and not at max.

I agree you probaly wont get higher fps on max but it would still be playable on max, an im sorry eyefinity doesnt appeal to everyone, my cards have it but i havent used it.
#7
I'm going to give this a shot to see if it comes through at this price

PC gaming does not appeal to everyone so don't be sorry. If we were all the same we would all still be playing on pong.

You can buy a 5850 on Overclockers for 15 quid less than this, ergo this is an amazing price

#11
yeah this is a good price for this card. voted hot.
#12
Amazon have the 5850 for a good price too.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0036QFVSG

Worth getting instead of the 5870 as the performance difference is about 5% on average. The 5850 can also be clocked to the speeds of the 5870 without issue (and even beyond if you flash an ASUS or MSI BIOS). The only thing it lacks are some shaders, but you won't really notice.

You could by a zx spectrum for this and still have change for a packet of crayons and a table top connect four set. Only joking.

But seriously, this post is not about what else you could spend your money on its about the deal for the graphics card in question.

The 360 cost £300+ when it first came out. Compare like to like, not 4 year old hardware to cutting edge  .. I think you'll find technology prices drop as they get older, a trend that's been around since there was such thing as 'technology' i believe.

Lets see the 360 or the gfx card you buy with the left over cash push 30" or triple-wide resolutions.

Some of us gave up our childrens-toys years ago.

Yeah, still too rich for me. When there is more DX11 games that I'm interested in I'll have a look. Hopefully Fermi will be providing some competition by then.

You can buy a new PS3 slim for less than this.
#23
Right now I can run crysis at 1920 x 1080 at highest setting (with AA disabled). Will wait for the radeon 5970 to come down to the #200 mark before I buy it. Just gotta wait for those stupid fools at nvidia to ignite a price war.

Hot although you could by my footy team for less :/

I'd rather not thanks very much! :p

The price of the 5870/5850 cards will drop in the next few weeks when Nvidia release their new fermi cards.
#25
Very cheap price for a 5870! a while ago I was going to upgrade to a 5850 when they were £200 but then they increased them to £230 so i ended up getting a 5770 as a temporary. Was gonna upgrade to a 5850 but this is so very tempting at only £15 more

Yes you can, but the PS3 can't produce anything nearly as good looking as Crysis or Shattered Horizon

Not gonna happen, You still pay £300+ for a 4870x2 (the 4xxx series equivilent of the 5970) and that's over a year old

I bought one of these a month or so ago after some deliberation for £298. Now I've always been a mid-range guy, buying cards in the £150 region (the best bang for buck) so was a Iittle dubious about its price\performance ratio but i can truly say I am over the moon with my purchase and not regretting spending all that money on it like i thought i would. This is a beast of a card and totally eats my old 4870 in terms of performance. Plus as a bonus it runs extremely cool and quiet!

Few things to remember is that is a pretty long card and needs atleast a 550 watt quality PSU to run it. Heres my thread on the avforums where one of the members helped me build my new rig.

Its not really all to do with the wattage of the PSU , its the amperage on the 12v rail that you need to concern yourself about (although higher wattage tends to have higher amperage, but not in all cases as you can buy cheap and nasty 700 w that wont have enough juice on the 12v rail, rec 40a on the 12v rail for a 5870 and 55-60 for crossfire) , also make sure you have enough PCI express power adaptors

Theoretically with the PS3 architecture it could produce at least the equivalent of crysis (and better) with its cell processor and direct onboard access to the video chip, the theoretical throughput of the processing output is phenomenal , its just that no one can be bothered to program correctly for it. Some info here

Oh please not the same fanboy tripe that we have been hearing for years.

It cant be ALL the lazy developer's faults.

in 'theory' its the best thing since sliced bread and beats the 360 and the PC hands down. In practice its a poorly designed Blu-ray trojan horse with an ancient and under powered GFX Chipset and too little RAM to do it justice. Its also extremely hard to get the best out of because outside of 1st party devs no one is willing to spend the money on such a small user base when they can sell millions on the 360 and PC for a quarter of the effort.

Regarding the 5870 its a super price and will destroy games for at least 18 months on a properly specced PC.
#34
For what it's worth... the 5870 on its own is 4-5x more powerful than all of the processors in the PS3 combined. Though how the PS3 got into this subject is a little confusing. :)

What a load of BS. The PS3 is crippled, always will be. I don't know how people can cling on to this pipe dream that one day someone will learn how to code for it properly. If Sony weren't so blinkered they would have learned their lesson from the PS2, esoteric hardware that is hard to program for is not the way forwards.

This is a cracking price, probably going to see prices creep down now the eyefinity versions are on the horizon with twice the RAM. Fermi still hasn't shown up yet though, so there's still no competition at the high end.

I bought the Sapphire 5850 for £240 just over 1 month ago so this is an amazing price, not that i would have bought this anyway as it wouldn't have fit into my case.

But yeh, these 5850's and 5870's are amazing.
