Sapphire Radeon 5870 Vapor-X - £319.99 @ Play

I've been looking for a 5850 for the past few months, but as prices spiral up towards the £300 mark, the 5870 is looking more and more tempting. The Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X has a non-reference cooler which helps keep it quiet and cool - it looks awesome too!

Next cheapest I can find is overclockers at £329.99.

Here's the gubbins:

The SAPPHIRE HD 5870 Vapor-X is based on the latest graphics architecture from the ATI division of AMD, the second generation of GPU to be built in its 40nm process. It supports the advanced graphical features of DirectX 11, and delivers spectacular video clarity, speed and visual effects, including over multiple monitors with the new ATI Eyefinity mode. Using ATI Stream technology, accelerate even the most demanding applications and do more than ever with your PC. The first to deliver full support for Microsoft DirectX 11, these GPUs enable rich, realistic visuals and explosive HD gaming performance so you can dominate the competition.

Is this good?

I need a new card but not sure what to get... I don't play games only use it for Digital graphics, photoshop etc (am a professional printer), I already have a Quadro FX3700 but not happy with the performance

What would you recomend?

A bit over priced cheaper here:

http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/XFX+Radeon+HD+5870+1024MB+GDDR5+PCI-Express+Graphics+card+?productId=37984

But keep an eye out for one around the £200 t 5850 even with the standard overclock that comes with the card is almost as good as the 5870

I got this one a few weeks ago for £212:

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/PCI-E/ATI+Radeon+5000+Series+PCI-E/XFX+ATI+Radeon+HD+5850+XXX+1024MB+GDDR5+PCI-Express+Graphics+Card+?productId=39199

But they gone up in price due to high demand and such a good card for the price

I honestly couldn't point you in the right direction when it comes to workstation cards, they're a bit of a mystery to me. AFAIK, the workstation cards are pretty much regular graphics cards with specific extensions for 2D operations (drawing lines in CAD and such like).

If Photoshop does offloading to the GPU using the DirectCompute API then you may see some acceleration.

Dont worry about cooling on these cards, mine is at max over clock (well using the ati one they go even higher using other programs) and they dont even reach 34oC and the fan you cant even here it :) if it needs to come in

Best card i ever had

These are the best card expencive but DX11 as well, if you not a hard core gamer then go for the cheaper ones, but keep and eye for the 5850 for around the £200 mark you cant go wrong.

I used to think otherwise but others on here told me different, so i looked into for quite a while and they were right :)

Each to their own, I'm a bit of a stickler for the high end kit. The Vapor-X comes with a slight factory overclock and quieter more efficient cooler. I'd say it was worth the extra £20 over the standard offering.

Just have to convince myself that parting with £320 is a good thing to do!

bashy you may want to take another look at the 5870 you linked to and the one in this deal, this has a special cooler(i.e. it's not a stock cooler) and is overclocked while the xfx you linked to isn't.

it's ~£327 on dabs(3-4 weeks), ~£345 on tekheads(2 were in stock when I looked over the last couple of days but seems to be gone now).

edit: damit got beaten to it while I was typing.

I see what you saying but look into the card it dont need the extra cooling these card run cold very cold, and i bet even if not the cooler itself i bet you could buy for around the £20 mark as an add on which still makes this deal high priced

even an overclocked 5850 dont get to 48oC :

The price the OP has shown is not bad looking about but i dont think the added cooler on these cards are needed

This is a HOT deal.
This particular card has much better cooling than regular 5870s and as such will either last longer or overclock higher depending on your preference.
IF you going for a 5870 then this is the one to get if it doesn't cost much more than the others, and if it's cheaper - then it's a no brainer :)

Look here for an excellent review. Note the 10/10 for performance. It is the best single GPU card around atm.

Edit - I have an interview for a new job on Friday, and if I get it I might just treat myself :) Finger's crossed...

Dont know what to do, wait for the G100 to come out as ive always had nvidia or go for a 5850/5870........HELP

5870 is just dick-waving at this point, surely? Especially if you don't even have a 2560 x 1600 monitor. I can't imagine why you'd really need one.

That said, this is a good price for the card so heat added. It's certainly hard to recommend the 5850 when the price keeps going up and up. The 5850 is now about 40% more expensive than the 4890, but sure as hell isn't 40% better in terms of performance.

seems like a good deal for a vapour x edition.

think you're getting confused with the 5970 there ;)
the 5870 is more for 1920x1200/1080 monitors.
