Very Cheap!, It won't run the newest games out but should be great for the older games and Hd playback etc.

will this do Vista? Using onboard graphics atm. Thanks

One review from Dabs :

Purchased in order to run aero on Windows Vista and it works a treat. Vista installs the drivers for you and then automatically updates itself with the latest drivers. A very cost-effective upgrade if you need to improve your graphics card in order to run aero on Vista.

Its should work ok with Vista, I've not tried it myself though.

I got one of these 2 years ago, its still going strong. Plays most games at an acceptable frame rate, good enough for the majority of todays mid-end games.

I have been pretty pleased with it, and i paid almost thrice this price. Only thing i will say is that since ive started using it with my TV aswell as my PC via the composite out it will only display the BIOS at 50HZ despite what i try to do to change it. All this means is that whenever i want to access the BIOS or view POST messages ive gotta turn on the TV.

For those with Vista, i downloaded the MS app to see if my PC was ready for Vista, and it gave the all clear, so i assume that this means it is OK for Vista.

Retek-Direct have Radeon 9800SE All-in-wonder cards (with TV tuner) for £26.15 delivered, only 128Mb RAM but an interesting alternative...

Suppose its not the point but you can get a cheap PCI analogue tv tuner for about £5-10.

OT but do you have a link for cheap tuners? Most online seem to start £15+. Anyhow, 9550 is good card and its a fair price, just though the AIW card might interest someone.
#11
How does this card compare to a Geforce 6200 with 256MB Video Memory?
#12
Doesn't a 9800SE blow away a 9550 in benchmarks though?
#13
stanglish - not sure about 'blows away' as its actually as its a cut-down 9800, think it only has 4 pixel pipelines (same as 9550) but it has 4 vertex shaders compared to 9550's 2. Also it operates at higher core and memory clock speeds, so I'd guess its in the order of 25 to 50% better.

Here's some benchmarks from 2004http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/2004/10/04/vga_charts_iv/:)

Well I was thinking Ebay etc, sorry.

Ebuyer have some at £20, If you want something else to use google checkout it knows the price down a bit.

There's a pretty decent comparison list for gfx cards here;

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/index.cfm?a=wiki&tag=rmp_vds

It hasn't got every card on there, and may not be completely accurate (I don't know what the rankings are actually based on) but there should be enough of them to give a fair comparison.
#16
Useful link there jayroller, according to your link the 9550 is near the bottom in 97th place, the 6200 is in 82nd and unfortunately the 9800SE isn't listed (my guess is it would be somewhere between the 9600XT (77th) and the 9700 (73rd). If you really want good gaming performance with new games on AGP there is still 1 cheap Geforce 7600GT left at ebuyer (£60 delivered after GC)..
#17
Will this card run the up coming Quake wars?
#18
Officially I believe it will, but I wouldn't expect very good performance. Expect to use only the lowest resolution and detail settings if you get this card.
#19
9800se is about 40% better han a 9550 I'd say (having had both previously). Some 9800se's unlock to full 9800pros also (very rare these days though).

Perosnally I'd recommend getting yourself a second-hand 9800pro which can be had for around 30 these days and can still just about manage some top titles.

Or if you can stretch to around £40 you can get yourself a second-hand 9800XT or 6600GT which are both still decent cards.

[the above list is VERY inaccurate in alot of places, and far to simplified, always look up plently of card reviews before buying]

Hi,

Can i pls clarify 2 things.

Will this card display windows aero (vista's 3d stuff)?
Has it got HD output?

Thanks
1 Like #21
Yes for aero - its DirectX 9 compatable and has the necessary 128mb ram. It doesn't have component or HDMI out (just composite and S-Video so not HD), but it can output HD and better resolutions using the DVI and analogue outputs...

Note that a cheaper card such as the 128Mb 6200 also fits this bill and comes with a silent cooling solution.
#22
I wonder if this would be a good cheap upgrade for an old Leadtek Nvidia Ti4200 GF4 128mb 4x agp...? Only want it for half life 2 and counterstrike really.

Edit: On looking at the comparison list looks like mine is higher + mine isn't too bad on the overclocking so mayaswell stick until I can afford a whole new system and go with PCI-E :)
#23
jah128, I'm looking for an AGP card which is quiet, cool and good at 2D gfx (I run 1680x1050). Not interested in games, but might do video editing in future.

Can you recommend anything?
#24
(edit - removed incorrect info, sorry)
furq - There is a passively cooled 9550 for only a couple of quid more (£28.21 delivered after GC). You could also look at something cheaper like a 6200 would be fine for your task (see post #22). If you are buying something that costs under £30 at ebuyer make sure you add something to bring the basket over £30 so you can use google checkout...
#25
Thanks - will take a look.
#26
These haven't really come down in price much!

Built my PC about 2 years ago and paid about ~£40 for one from Ebuyer.

Upgraded now though, the 9550 is in a box somewhere.
#27
I was thinking the same thing myself Nikolic, I got a passive one a couple of years ago (June 05) for £22.50 + vat & delivery from Retek. Hotter than it should be i reckon.
#28
i had the same trouble with a ati card with the bios and post screens its real rubbish in the end i sold it and went for a nvidia that did work if you just use your pc to surf the net then it will be fine but if you change things in the bios then give it a miss if you have it plugged in to a lcd/plasma it will bug the hell out of you the bios/cmos and post screen are very important to the running of your machine the post highlights problems and if you cant see them how can you sort them out i wouldnt say it was cheap either with google checkout there are some far better cards for around the same money

LMAO you serious?
#30
im actually using a 9800se with softmod to open up all the 8 pipelines for the past 3 years (se suppose to be able to use 4 without the softmod).
even until now ^^ im still happy with it... though i dont often play games

but as mention, not all the card can be unlock successfully...
#31
Here is a list of ATI cards supported by Vista.

http://ati.amd.com/technology/WindowsVista/Products.html

Note the 9550 is second from bottom on the list so is by no means a "top end" card, almost "bottom end".

But it is a cheap way of going from "on board" graphics that will not run Aero, to a card that supports Vista and the Aero interface.

Go for a 256Mb if you can. 128Mb is a bit low, and 512Mb is not worth it.
#32
Only 269 in stock.........be quick!, lol

AFAIK (which is limited!) there is very little difference between AGP 4x and AGP 8x, So an 8x should fit into a 4x AGP slot fine.

This card should work ok, Do you know what motherboard is in it?

Hopefully else will be able to say a straight yes or no.
#35
This graphics card is alright, I have two systems with them in. The only probelm I have really had with them is the processor fan keeps logging up with dust.
#36
thanks Iom-RF, no idea about motherboard, it's a sony vaio comp. will give this card a go i reckon, ta.

I'm not familiar with Sony's!

I just put an AGP 8 into my AGP 4 slot.

They are backward compatible.
