great price...hot
#3
the 4890s are coming out in april,so id hold off till then, these will drop even more in price then hopefully.
#4
Good price, but unfortunately both Sapphire and Pixmania are at the top of my list of ‘do not touch’ companies. RMA would be a pain. Use your credit card if you choose to go ahead.

That's sad to hear about Sapphire I wonder if their quality has declined recently? I've bought a total of 8 sapphire cards for various PCs over the last couple of years and I have never had problems with any of them.
#6
would rather pay the extra £7 and get the powercolour one from novatech that's way higher clocked with a custom cooler as sapphire is probably the best make for ATI cards but pixmania is the worst. Someone has repeated what i said on the powercolour thread a few days back we are starting to see drops on the 4870 as its hold at the top of the single card single slot for ATI is toppled by the forthcoming 4890 so take my advise keep your money and either wait for the new card of wait for them to drop to about £120 for the 512mb and £140 for the gb version.
#7
yeh id prefer novatech
#8
damn i just bought a gtx 260 for £183 was that even worth it?
#9
Jeez, you're a sad fecker if you're buying this sort of stuff right now:p

The 260 is a pretty even match for the 4870 maybe a slight bit faster but its not worth the £50 more as its a old card that has been replaced by the 280 i personally wouldn't touch the 260 i don't have nothing against nvidia infact i prefer them over ATI but they are taking the **** with the price of there cards when the 4890 comes out its expected at the price point of the 4870 so around £180 maybe £200 but should be able to take the 280 on and beat it for less money.

£5 off a £150 spend. I suppose there might be something worth buying to top it up to the £150 mark?

Also the 1GB verion is £30 more, with the voucher £25 more. Might be worth it for some :)
#12
Pixmania deals should be banned from HUKD.....seriously.
#13
will probably get the novatech one as I will be watercooling the card plus just realised a novatech is only a 10min drive from my house.

I just snapped one of these up and it's great - I was going from an old 8800GTS640MB though, which was well past it's sell by date.

Not sure that the 4890 will be coming out in the same price bracket - isn't it more likely to be over £200 on launch? Still can see the point about 4870s going down further in price over the next couple of months. When do we start seeing the first 4890s though?

...

The 260 was NOT replaced by the 280. The 280 is a higher end part, at higher cost. Its on a completely seperate line. The 260, was theoretically replaced by the 265.

Also, its completely closed minded of you to make statements such as the above, when you have no idea what performance the 4890 is going to have, and you have no idea what cost it will come out at. Sure, you can guess and speculate, but thats hardly useful considering your obvious lack of knowledge on the subject.

You need to realise that there isn't just ONE card for everyone to buy. The 4890 will be ATI's flagship single card model (until the 4890gx2 of course) and so will be released at a premium, overpriced, just because of this.

Nvidia aren't stupid. Their directors aren't busy playing 5 a side in the board room while ATI do this - price cuts and revisions will come on Nvidias stuff to keep them competitive.

I bought a Sapphire 4870 1Gb version from pixmania at Xmas time when it posted on hotukdeals.

Arrived 4 or 5 days after payment (by credit card ) and had no problems at all.

All games cranked upto max on a 1920x1080 monitor , except Crysis of course!

Never had to RMA anything to them, going by other people on here it might be a headache
#19
I'm looking forward to the 4890 so I can play NecroVisioN & Cryostasis @ more then 25 FPS... lol. My ATI 1950XT is fanally tired bless it (I think it's mainly due to the 256MB that it's slow because I use 1680x1050)

Its not closed minded at all. The Green Machine were profiting for years with ridiculously priced cards whilst ATI were in the doldrums.....Until the 4870 came out and blew them all away at half the price of the nearest competitor that Nvidia had. The fact that they had to cut the price of their cards almost in half within 6 months to compete with ATI proved how overpriced they were in the first place.

Price revisions might come but since the ATI cards all offer better bang for buck they need to redefine their business model in the first instance. Large numbers of people simply wont pay £500 for a GFX Card in the current perilous financial climate.

Besides, ATI and Nvidia must be looking over their shoulder at what Larrabee will be like when it finally does come to market because its said to blow everything they have now and planned for the future out of the water, but I will believe that when i see it and I certainly dont think that Intel owning both the CPU and GPU markets will be good for consumers.

I have had a 4870 from day one and I can safely say that its one of the very best cards I have ever owned.

Its not like their Intel graphical accelerator **** that you get nowadays.

This is going to be a whole new industry standard. They have Hollywood CGI companies onboard as well so it will be big and you can bet it will be fed to us at every oppertunity with Windows 7 in 2010.

Like I said previously It cant be a good thing for the consumer.

Windows 7? *looks up* ... lol

Meh... one thing after another, as long as they keep kicking ass tis all good.

I bought one of these about a week or two ago when they were on offer for £150 inc delivery. I ordered it on a Wednesday & received it on the Friday. Does exactley what it says on the tin. Great card for the price. Am playing Crysis maxed on everything bar AA on a 37" 1380x768 (I think) screen. As for the new cards coming out, well gonna wait for a while & maybe get a 2nd one of these & crossfire it. Figure that should give my system more juice than a 4890.
#26
not a bad price but they do seem to be getting cheaper each week.

think i'll stick with my oc'd 4830 until i can save enough pennies for a 4840x2 or 4870x2 which beats anything Nvidaripoff-we-rebadge-everything (8800,9800,250) can put out, only good thing they have is hardware Physx, but DX11 will make that redundant.

Did you actually read the post you were replying to ? :)

Anarchist simply stated that it's closed minded to simply assume the 4890 will be a good deal.
He's quite right - it may be great, or it may be junk. nVidia may lower the price of their GTX 280 to £150. Nobody knows !
Speculation and Brand-Loyality are silly in video-card land - you should be buying whichever card offers the greatest performance for your given budget, irrespective of the make and model.

So what ?
It would be silly to choose an ATI card because of that, even if the equivalent nVidia card performed better !
I'm running an HD4870 right now, and it's excellent. Do you think I would still have chosen it if the GTX 280 was the same price ? Hell no ! That would be foolish :)

Right now, the HD4870 offers excellent value for money, and is the card of choice. If ATI are in the same situation with the next round, then stick with them. If nVidia take the lead, then jump !
#28
Got this a week or so ago for £150 at Pixmania as well. It is an awesome card, compared to my old 9600gt which could get a maximum of 10-12 fps full res, very high everything on Crysis, the 4870 can get upto 30 and an average of 25 on the same set up, more than a 50% improvement.

This card is pretty big and covered up 2 of my SATA ports on my mATX motherboard so take that into consideration if you need to use more than 2 and if your sata ports are close to the PCI-E slot.

Of course you are correct.

There is always the possibility that ATI could all of a sudden bring out a 16mb Voodoo one killer with a £600 pricetag.

Its not about whether the card will be better but how much better it will be than current cards and ATI arent stupid when it comes to pricing either, they never have been.

If its the same kind of jump from 3870X2 to 4870 then we are all on a winner.

£159 now, they ended the price early, barely lasted a day, which makes it same price as there 1gb version, madness

Only a mod can unexpire a deal.

Simply 'report' the initial post, with a brief 'please unexpire, thank you' message . It's never failed me, even on other people's posts :)

I accidently clicked expired before and if it got the deal expired I do apologise. I simply clicked the link and saw the price was different. I doubt it was me as I don't have many posts or much rep but though I'd apologise anyway! Hot deal btw.

Pixmania deals should be banned from HUKD.....seriously.

I don't get the deep resentment people have for Pixmania on this forum. Sure a few people have had issues but I've had issues with Ebuyer and Burnmedia for example and I don't go around saying how bad they are, I accept that problems can and will happen and there will always be people who are unhappy with a company as big as pixmania.

Very true & sensible post

There are a few bad 'uns that get it wrong oftener than most, but I doubt Pixmania's one of them.
