hothothot! Been following this for quite a while now. Ive been very drawn between this card and a 570. Having allways had nvidia cards I was a little shy to switch. Im upgrading from two 9800 GT's (SLI) to this. The reasons ive gone for THIS one is the BIG cost diffrence (£100+) And the fact you can unlock this card to become its bigger brother the 6970, so in effect saving even more money. And considering how kikatek is doing it, your saving a bundle all together.

Thanks for posting again downhill - wouldn't have noticed this came back in stock otherwise.

You are welcome and thanks for reply. Regarding you VGA. If you have extra £50 you can go for 2x GTX 460 (SLI) which gives you a lot of performance for money. Making it total about £260.

wow!! that would be so nice in my rig!!

Sorry to sound cliche but will this cope with crysis warhead max settings 1080p v-synced at 60hz?
As that criteria is surely where it's at in gauging performance? yes I know crysis is old tech shader wise, but it's the raw FLOP peformance Im looking for.

Don't forget you can flash this card to perform like a 6970!

You can get a GTX570 for £55 more (£265), and not for £100 more, like you say. On the other hand, GTX570 beats both this card and the 6970 in most games (see Custom PC issue 090) .
Until recently, I had an older ATI 4970 card and tested many games with it, and some of the older games have serious driver issues with ATI cards. Most of the games that had issues with the ATI card now run fine on my GTX570 card.
From now on I'll stick with Nvidia, I don't have time spending hours on the internet searching for fixes for games that have issues with ATI cards (example: Return to Castle Wolfenstein / Win7 64bit using ATI card doesn't run, but works OK on Nvidia card).

Is this a dual chip card?

Looking to Replace my 4870x2 now i have a 3dtv
#13
@118luke No, it's a single chip card. There's a dual chip version, I think it's the 6990.

I'd still go for the ATI card. The nvidia drivers are more mature, ATI less so, so there would be more to come. I also like the lower power usage, the fact it can be hacked to a full 6970 and the awesome audio features. As for return to castle wolfenstien, is that the 2001 game you're on about? Probably why it has issues with 64bit version of windows. The 570 is a good card, and if that was available for £200ish, I'd consider getting that too. As it is, this card is immense value.
#16
Damn, hot. Also, I don't know why people moan about ATI drivers, I have never had a problem ever! Infact the reason I switched to ATi after using Nvidia for so many years was the Nvidia drivers drove me insane with problems.

That's what I don't get about PC gaming, it seems more about your frame rate than how good at the game you are? Do people even play the games, or just see how fast it runs?

xbox hardware is 6 years old hence the price difference.

i have both, use the xbox online. and the pc for 1 player, hook up the xbox controller to the pc and its soooo much better that an xbox.

I bought 2 6870s as a Christmas pressie to myself along with a Sidewinder X8 Mouse and a Sidewinder X6 Keyboard total cost came in at just shy of £500. More than the cost of a PS3 and an Xbox 360 rolled into one.

Its for my new i7 system that I am in the process of aquiring bit by bit because I really dont want to drop the full amount in one go. I really want an i7 980X but the £800 cost of the CPU alone is rather prohibitive to explain to the good lady in good conscience so it will be a 950.

But you can do that with PCs. You cant do that with a console and no matter what a console fanboy tells you the PS3 or the 360 can never even come close to replicating the experience you get from playing games online with your friends on a PC.

I bought this card about 2 weeks ago and its fantastic. Even got it running 3D on maximum detail on loads of games.
You can do a lot more with your PC, play across 3 screens, 3D conversion for many many games, and just playing at a much higher quality of detail and more importantly frame rate. Plus games are infinitely more customisable.

BUT saying PS3 or xbox can never come close to replicating the experience is a bit much, I can have just as much fun on my consoles.
Especially nowadays when very few games actually look that different on PC compared to the consoles due to lack of exclusive PC games programmers.

Anyway, back to the card. I got mine for £225 two weeks ago, so this was a good deal. Very few problems with Ati, except when trying to get the 3D to work. This took a bit of tweaking.

So, by modding this card as a 6970, would be considered an O.C or not really. Any drawback that anyone knows about??

PS3 & Xbox are great machines however, if you think they are really just computers with a joypad and a fancy os, PC games have declined in recent year because of consoles but with a pc you can customise levels (think of it like each game is little big planet) or gives you some customise ability through programming, you can pick your own input devices (mouse, joystick, pad, etc) and not be limited to official ones, More Freedom!

One major point of pc gaming is games last longer generally you will know about dlc for games on consoles but alot for pc are user made and free or really cheap, and games like counter strike source or the evil World of warcraft can be played alot more because they are graphically improved over time for the newer equipment they has been released brings them upto date without buying the newer version. However one major point is pc costs more than console, games cost less.
So twice as much for a pc but half price of a console game so all works it way out in the end depends how much of a game you are a true pro gamer main unit is a pc but thats just because of the Freedom to do anything

Fair enough, each to their own, but all I wanna do is play the game. And when people want to spend £800 on a CPU and £200+ on a GPU that's gonna take a lot of cheaper games and DLC to justify.

You say more freedom - yet people choose to use the console joypad on their PC!

But like I say, each to their own, I was just curious and still feel the 'never even get close' statement is a little far fetched.

£800 for a cpu? yeh right
dont need a £200+ GPU to play games.
GPU's are not only used for gaming, people use them for video. photo editing and many other tasks too.
Even a low end PC nowadays will outpeform a console in terms of graphics and general gameplay.

Mines came today, and for the free delivery option I had, it came as a surprise when I seen that I got a parcel early, thumbs ups to kikatek so far.

It's my first ever graphics card bought, for my first ever build, I can honestly say that my £125 budget went out the window, and there were good reasons, this at this price is a bargain + Flash update to a 6970.

Will be looking to crossfire in 6 months, if I need more umpth.

Still got CPU and MB to buy

2500K @ 155-165 would be a good buy as there is a big jump from this to the 2600K and does not look like it is value for money compared to the 2500k, I could technically get a SSD for the extra amount to speed things up.

Flashing it to a 6970 is not risk-free.. http://www.overclock.net/ati/919230-6950-flash-reported-damage.html

You can unlock the extra shaders whilst keeping the 6950 BIOS, which seems quite safe. And I suppose there's nothing stopping you overclocking the card to 6970 level's which is also (relatively) safe.

Uhmm that's not quite right. 3-4 years ago I was a heavy gamer of World of Warcraft. Member of a hardocore raiding guild.
In case you don't know "raid" in WOW terms means playing in sessions of 40 players all against one massive extra difficult monster.

In these raids I was a healer losing a second because my PC did not respond meant the main tank died and after that everyone died (i.e. 40 people dead because of you) this was my life for almost 2 years my PC could not cope with 40 people moving everywhere was getting something like 4fps. and we are talking and old game.

In the end i upgraded my PC to the latest at the time a 8800GT 1GB and quadcore, etc which gave me almost 70 -80 fps now the raids where great and I was very happy at the time.
After 2 years of WOW i decided to quit I could not keep up with a never ending game. And now my PC is still playing ok with that 8800gt and I use the XBOX or ps3 for casual gaming. No more hardcore games for me.

Mine arrived. i chose the free option and it came next day which was obviously pleased me. So A* for the seller. As for the gfx card - i had a fair bit of trouble flashing the card to a 6970. There are multiple ways of doing it and none seemed to really work for me. Eventually i found the modify bios option. (save ur cards bios - and just use a command line to unlock the shaders) This worked perfectly. After unlocking the shaders i used the inbuilt ATI overclocking tool to boost the card a little more which no problems.

All in all - very pleased. The card is VERY VERY quiet, but thats in comparison to my 9800gts that were in sli and made my pc sound like a "helicopter" as the missis use to say. Deffinatly would recommend this purchase and although i know this post is a little out dated and the stock is currently out on this particular offer. The price isent much higher elsewhere. Buy one guys :)

Nice Comment. Just one more thing. You mentioned that you had quite a big trouble with flashing it to HD 6970. I wonder if you could post link to the forum which says how to do it. I mean you said that there are multiple methods of doing it so if you could post the link to the method you have used.
Thanks. X)

Sure, method i used is posted in the topic:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=137136&page=50
And consists of doing the following:
(its posted half way down the page)
1. Save your cards bios using GPUz to your desktop:
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
2. Use this script to modify YOUR exact bios and enable all shaders:
http://www.techpowerup.com/wizzard/Mod_BIOS_HD_6950.zip
3. Use this script to flash this modified bios to your card with your card's bios selection switch on '1':
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...ing_Tools.html
4. Download and install Trixx 3.02 beta:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=S71ZJ4SW
5. In Trixx, immediatly go to the 'fan control' screen and click 'custom', then setup a custom fan curve that keeps your card at least around 40*-45* idle and 80* or less at full load.
I have my curve setup with 35% fan speed up until 70*, then a constant slope up from there to 100% fan at 100*.

Just for the record - what i initially tried was this:

http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/159

Which is a whole new bios for the card and has a lower sucsess rate and a higher instability rate.
