Oct 2004

Tom Hanks Stars as the captain of a small platoon sent to rescue a young soldier who is to be sent home. The film follows the small band of men as they weave their way through occupied France in a bid to find the young soldier, Private Ryan. With a superb supporting cast including Matt Damon and Vin Diesel, Saving Private Ryan offers an intimate and personal portrait of the affects of war on the individual.

Spielberg's innovative camerawork, which places the camera in the midst of the action, giving the viewer the perspective of a soldier caught-up in the heart of the battle, lends an authenticity to the film and enhances the shocking and tragic plight of the protagonists. The grainy cinematography and haunting soundtrack supplement the superlative narrative and sustain the immediacy of the plot. From the opening sequence through to the concluding scenes, the audience is swept along at a frantic pace that gives the illusion that the viewer is taking in everything that is happening at the same time as the characters.
