Not sure I can recommend too much, even as a freebie, as a good guide book will pay back many times its cost over a couple of weeks.

On the plus side, it's free and there are some decent but routine suggestions (visit "Edimburgh", avoid peak season rip-offs, etc.) and general ideas to peruse. The last few sections are quite good.

The "history" sections are sketchy, though... and utter twaddle in places, from Scots being the oldest British language which somehow caused the Highland Clearances(!) through to Scotland becoming a SEPARATE country from England due to the Act of Union.

Some very strange agenda stuff, too, such as "don't drink alcohol" and (many?) bars, restaurants and clubs won't allow you to drink, anyhow, and you need to check local government about this... what the heck? (while saying nothing at all about the - usually ignored - zones prohibiting *public* drinking).
The following section on "trespassing" is also incorrect (trespassing in a city park??) and is oblivious to "right to roam" legislation.

Since we're separate and all - does that mean my taxes didn't go towards that gaudy pantomime yesterday (edited)

Will be doing this in August. Make sure you book your hotels, B&Bs or camping sites in advance, at least 9m+ otherwise you might have difficulty in finding places. Good luck. (edited)

Don’t do the NC 500, you have been warned! the roads are unbelievably bad, they don’t have potholes, they have Moon craters in the roads!!

Don't do the NC500 because it's a slap-dash draw-a-line tourist trap exploited by all and sundry to charge the earth, especially in high season. There's so much more of interest to find by delving around "off line", if not totally off the beaten track...

The roads, however, are soooo much better than they used to be 30-40 years ago, believe it or not! (edited)

"The 10 tips you absolutely must know about currency exchange and foreign ATMs to avoid excessive fees and criminal activities"... what's wrong with oor notes!?

We use Euros, apparently (per the start of chapter 6). About as much chance spending those as the (still existing) £1 RBS notes which most people haven't seen for years.

No warning to keep a stash of 10p/20p coins for public toilets where those still exist in tourist zones, bus stations, etc., either. ;p~
