homeserve is £5 a month with service awful deal.

Seems reasonably priced for peace of mind.
Yes many boilers come with long warranties but my experience with Vaillant was it's not worth the paper it's printed on. Mine was less than 12 months old when a service message came up and the boiler wouldn't fire up. The technician came out and claimed there had been a voltage spike taking out the main board. Nothing else in the house was affected and he could offer no evidence other than that nothing else would cause it. The parts with labour would have come to £470!
Luckily, the original installer came to the rescue and replaced it all at his cost but Vaillant have left a bad taste, other than it's a bloody good boiler and uses a lot less gas than my previous Ariston.
If that's their own tech then that's disappointing; new boards cost up to about £100 (see Ebay) and swapping them should be an easy half hours work.

Yes it was their own man who came out initially. When the original installer came, it took him about half an hour and was aghast at what had gone on.

I pay £15 a YEAR extra for boiler cover on my Admiral house insurance (which in itself barely costs any more than this premium). When the boiler developed a fault over Xmas I got British Gas out to fix it and the insurer is refunding me the money. No need to service the boiler either.

ditto, Scottish power phoned me to offer this deal but already get it included with admiral house insurance

homeserve is £5 a month with service awful deal.

I signed up to homeserve hastily, tempted by an offer making it £3 a month. It rose to £14 a month in the 2nd year, all with a £95 excess.
The one time I had to use them, I paid a £95 fee and they guaranteed someone would come the same day as we've got 2 toddlers. After a series of cancelled appointments, someone eventually turned up 2 days later and fixed it within 5 minutes.

Over 5 years this comes to the price of a new boiler. Why not just pay for a new one when you need it??
Where can you get a new combi installed for that money?

I wrote new boiler, not boiler plus installation.

Yes, because when your boiler packs in on a freezing cold night in the middle of winter, you could just nip out straight away and pop a new one in..................
In all seriousness, I wouldn't touch Scottish Power with a bargepole. Awful customer service. Been with British Gas for years on their Homecare package and can't fault them. Worth paying that little more for and the annual service should prolong the life of your boiler. Excellent service and really good engineers.

This deal is now colder than that night you describe :p

Homeserve £9.50 a month plus £50 quidco.

Home serve have a £50 excess even for the annual free service there is a £50 excess.
I've had to take SP to the ombudsman before, just google SP customer reviews.
Tempting at this time of year but I wouldn't give them the time of day. As a previous Home comfort customer, their customer service was absolutely shocking.
I wouldn't trust any offer by Scottish power.

I bought a wifi controlled plug/socket from lidl for £12.99 to switch boiler on/off. Works a treat.

Not true, but I won't make any unsubstantiated claims about your abilities.

Make as many claims as you want mate, I've been an electrician for 10 years so I know what my abilities are.

I was told if after 24 months you decide not to continue you keep the unit (the cost of removal was more then unit cost to them). What you do loose is access to their online app meaning you loose remote access and reporting. Do not know if anyone has a alternative app that will work with it.
Are you sure you get to keep the unit? I looked at doing this before but decided against it as after the 24 months you either continue to pay £5 a month for the 3G connection or they will take the unit back

Scottish power seems to be alot more expensive for Eletricitity than EDF Blue but cheaper than British Gas for Gas.
Been with sp for a number of years with no problems, very polite staff who always ring back when they say they will. Their online billing and meter readings are also straight forward and easy to use. They also monitor useage and reduce your Monthly payments to Suit so you never owe them too much and they never owe you too much. As sfor prices I fixed 2 years ago with boiler cover get a pretty good deal compared towh whats available today. As for switching the only way to get a accurate figure of who is cheapest is to base it on actual useage, so if you log monthly useage for 12 months you will then be able to accurately compare prices when you come to switch providers.

Seriously guys look at ebico.

It tells me I'd save £180 going with Scottish Power.
I could even take their most expensive product including "HomeComfort Premium Care" and still save £2.45!!

What rate per KWh is scottish power offering you then?
I can only assume you are using a hell of alot of energy to which scotish power can be cheaper as they use 2 rates 25p 1st 200kwh then 10p~ after that. works out cheaper if your using a shed load of energy

My usage over the last year was Electricity 5488kWh, Gas 12856kWh so pretty average really.
I don't pay attention to unit prices as all suppliers are different. I pay £98 a month with Scottish Power which is dear enough but Ebico wanted more than £112

Jesus lol. 5488 electricity 12856 gas. I use 1500-2500 elec and 4-5000 gas.. So yeah. the 2nd rate tarriff would work out better for you. Ebico is for lower use. however do lok at the unit price. thats the most important. the monthly amount set is often set lower than the amount you actually need. then after several payments they will rise the amount to what is required to cover your usage

i am 63 years old and im on pension credit , i applied for it and i only recieved a rebate of just £12 , is this right ?
I don't believe that im still working at 65 and my husband worked till he was 72. Our daughter is with Scottish Power and was told because of her depression but mostly because she has 2 children one only 15 mths old she would be entitled to get help with her electric but now been told she probably missed the qualifying date. She didn't know anything about it last year and only found out this year because she was told not by the company but friends. All our family have worked all our lives and got nothing In return. Could you please advise why no one tells by vulnerable people about the help they could get and bless her when she can apply for it. She not a scrounger she just been told she can get milk tokens but we didn't know. Thanks hope b reply to this
Wayfarer44
I meet several of those criteria - but I hadn't heard of this and I've yet yet to hear from anyone about it. Other than here of course - thanks Mandz27 for the info.

Wonder if I ever will? I hear of great deals for pensioners every day, but precious few ever seem to amount to more than vapourware.
You can apply for it yourself so that you are not forgotten. The form should be with the co. that you
are with for your electric if you can't find it give them a ring
Just to raise awareness it appears that the scheme for winter 2014/2015 is now open so you can make a claim if you do not automatically qualify. I recommend early application.
I meet some of the criteria too have never had letter from DWP and very anoid that ive been missing out on this

As a major distributor of CO Alarms in the UK and Ireland, I agree with dca860, the battery product is the best product to use, because the sealed in Lithium Battery lasts the life of the Carbon monoxide sensor( 6.5 years, so there is no need for the expense of a mains product and all the wiring costs.
Kidde ones half price in Tesco (about £8.50). Has been posted.

Good idea but not a great price.
a life is worth such a paltry sum for sure.
Why threse aren't mandatory legally obliged kit for households I'll never know, as we have a woodburner (& a chimney thus running through the house) we have one in the well ventilated stove source room) & one in each of the bedrooms adjacent to the chimney stack, just in case over time there are leakages... you never know, it's unlined after all.

don't gamble fit & forget, being a fire angel it'll probably have a little pop up red warning flag to say no battery if it's ever taken out, the PP9? these need are pricey but do last well.
Agreed, 7 years is a decent lifespan. I'm happy with my mains powered one :-) but this is a decent price for the specific unit
waby1234
The link is dead and goes to an affiliate website.... try here https://scottishpowershop.co.uk/Item.aspx?id=20&CategoryID=2

Is this a battery powered CO detector? I wouldn't buy a battery powered one, mains is much safer as it cannot ever run out.

I cannot fathom the link issue - your's is identical to the one I put it! (I just checked it again and re-saved it - still no good)
Most of the energy supplier ones are sealed batteries because statistics show the replaceable ones are in fact the ones people neglect to replace!
The sealed ones last the life of the sensor unit - 7 years (as this one does). Probably enough?
Tue enough mains ones will never run out but under government regs, unless it has a 13A plug on it, you need to get an electrician to install it! A 13A plug is no good as it will end up being sited at wainscot height which is not effective.
In any case, I just posted this as an easy safe solution at a good price. I'm sure there are alternatives for the minorities wishes

If they do you just leave and look for another supplier or tarriff. As mentioned you can leave without any penalty.

I'm with ScottishPower, so this looks good to me - but would appreciate someone explaining why this is getting cold votes.

1: By changing now you will immediately be paying a higher rate
"Wrong" by moving to this I am saving 19% & 10% respectively, as the tarrif I am on is increasing in price.

2: They will raise the tarrifs on this product
"Wrong" They have already stated that online Energy Saver 14 is not affected by the price rise.

3: You'll be locking yourself to Scottish power for another year
"Wrong" If they increase the prices on this tarriff then you have the right to leave "without penalty" as per their terms and conditions which I have already posted earlier.

4: You won't gain any cashback for switching to a different supplier
"Correct" But cashback is not everything if the prices are not cheaper. If I could get a cheaper tarrif with cashback then I would 100% be switching to that tarrif. Also at present there is not many good cashback deals out there at the moment.

By switching to this tarriff you are only locking yourself in for 12 months if they do not increase the price, if they increase the price you have the right to leave without penalty!!

1. your current tariff hasnt increased YET. By the time it has, your new tariff will have probably gone up as well.

I'll be notifying Scottish Power that I'll be rejecting their price increase on the 31st of July, which will ensure I'll be on my old tarrifs until the switch goes through, which can take up to two months.

By the end of July the majority of other power companies will have published what their price rises will be, if you change supplier now God only know how much they'll raise their tarrifs by, but you can be sure that they will.

Energy companies offer no incentives to stay with them, I change as often as possible to make the most of the cashback offers available, I got £100 cashback when moving to Scottish Power which to date has saved me over 20% of my energy costs.

Many thanks for this detailed and informative reply - appreciate you taking the time to do that.
peterdarlison

The Fox
check your prices with other companies first, I'm currently with Scottish Power and when they offered me both these tariffs i found other companies a lot cheaper, I am now transferring to another company and £40 cashback. Don't forget Online Energy Saver 14 is not a fixed priced tariff, just 2% below the 'high' standard tariff.

Good move if you've been with them 12 months as there is a penalty clause if not!!
Pete

Ive had no issues with them. Manage my account online and enter the meter readings in at the beginning of each month so I know exactly what my bills are plus monthly useage. Works well for me. Means I get no shock bills through the post.

£20 virgin wines vouchers are ten a penny if you look about. and for the record, supermarket wine is far better imo than virgin. richard branson has either not tasted his own stock or his taste buds are naff.
Agreed! Best deal on wine is the 3 for £10 started by ASDA and looks to be in most big supermarkets now. Works out cheaper and better all round than mail order money off stunts

This clearly isn't a hot deal? It is a suggestion that may be beneficial for some and not for others, pretty much a gamble either way. I wouldn't post a hot deal for Ebico or Uswitch so why for a capped rate which isn't that great when better capped rates have been available in the past for a long time? This warrants a post somwehere but not in deals section imo.

I had 1 post deleted and 1 moved to misc for this reason last weekend so I'm a bit peeved, twitter and bisted  that it's not consistent ;-)

I am sure that the free monitor is when you do go for the one with the tie in , if you go for the one without the tie in then you don't get it. Worth checking - you will probably not move anyway but thought I would mention this.

The free monitor version of price protection with E.on has a £35 termination fee. Their PP17 product (no monitor) has no termination fee
Zolasfoot;2639928
Just swapped with Eon and got it fixed till October 2009, plus got a free electricty monitoring device, plus no tie ins on the contract. From what i read on numerous site, switch ASAP before you get stitched up.

did the same the other month and got £70 cashback through quidco, within bank account in less than a month, very happy!!

Well didnt take long. Scottish power raised their prices today! Weldone those who got in on this.
So glad I signed up to this now.
..... Only problem is the Eon deal is now dearer from last Thursday but still capped until 10/2009.

It's a fast moving market at the moment and prices will be going up soon! I guess around 5 weeks or so and we'll see BG or someone brave taking the plunge and prices increasing by around 20% in one go.
BigBry;2375350
The SP 2011 deal which was withdrawn at few weeks back at the old price had no penalty clause. The replacement 2011 scheme which lasted a matter of days did have a tie in penalty and their current 2009 deal also has a penalty clause. I can only find the current T&C's and it confirms the current penalty clauses for the 2009 deal on page 1;

http://www.scottishpower.co.uk/pricing_pdfs/Fixed_Price_Tarriff.pdf

The only current 2009+ deal with no tie in that I know of is the Eon deal.

Thanks - that is just what I was looking for - I thought it had all changed when I looked for this info. Thanks
THERE IS NO increase in fuel prices................ its all just profitering from the suppliers.

and a way for the government to use it as a hidden tax. theyll never state this of course, but thats whats going on.

same as petrol prices, are blamed on high oil $$$ . WTF ? its 80% TAX on every litre.

government is pulling the wool over peoples eyes as usual

This offer has been withdrawn from ScottishPower's website and most of the comparison/cashback sites, if you still want to sign up you can do so today over the phone on their sales line 0800 400 200 Opt 2

Just called that number. Regrettably this offer has been removed on Friday. :-(
Make sure you do your sums before taking any of these deals out. i just worked my best fixed rate price deal out against my current supplier which is Atlantic who put their prices up on 1st April.

Npower deal worked out at 45% more over a year so you have to weigh up whether you consider prices will rise by that amount. the npower prices were cheaper than scottish power hence why i used their fixed cap price.

ATLANTIC ELECTRIC & GAS

Electric Reading 26th May 2006 52636
Electric Reading 26th May 2008 63520
Gas Reading 26th May 2006 9250
Gas 26th May 2008 350

Electric per year = 5442 kwh
gas per year = 550 X 31 to get KWH = 17176kwh

Atlantic price per kwh electric 10.26
Standing charge per day electric 12.63
Atlantic price per kwh gas 2.62
Standing charge per day gas 14.03

Total per year electric = (12.63 x 365) +( 10.26 x 5442) / 100 = £605
Total per year gas = (14.03 x 365) +( 2.62 x 17176) / 100 = £547

Total per year £1,152
less loyalty bonus of one months premium if £80 =TOTAL PER YEAR OF £1,082

NPOWER ELECTRIC & GAS FIXED UNTIL 31/12/10

Electric per year = 5442 kwh
gas per year = 550 X 31 to get KWH = 17176kwh

Npower price per kwh electric (1st 728 kwh per year) 15.173
Npower price per kwh electric (Remaining kwh) 12.243
Standing charge per day electric 0

Npower price per kwh Gas (1st 4572 kwh per year) 7.409
Npower price per kwh Gas (Remaining kwh) 2.235
Standing charge per day gasc 0

Total per year electric = (15.173 x 728) +( 12.243 x 4714) / 100 = £784
Total per year gas = (7.409 x 4572) +( 2.235 x 12604) / 100 = £828

Total per year = £1,612
less quidco of £40 =£1,572

Percentage difference = 45%

It is, but I couldn't actually find a SWITCH into that! :x

Still showing as £61 today.
It was only £61 until the 31st October wasn't it?

It should be possible to combine both offers, but I'm stumped if I know how.

Probably would work by clicking on the link from quidco then going to the link in my post.
I wouldn't trust Scottish power either! A few years back a door-to-door canvasser called and we said no thanks to switching electricity and thought nothing of it. Next thing we know is our current supplier has sent us the final bill and we get welcome letters from Scottish power! It turns out the canvasser signed a signature on our behalf to switch over! We complained bitterly and got the ombudsmen involved but they could do little or nothing and the person who did it had left anyway so they couldn't even sack someone, it was a total nightmare!
I don't know how much setanta costs but if you do a dual switch go via quidco as you get £61 back. This must be better than 2 months free?

Good if you dont trust quidco tracking.
Any ideas re the quidco thing?

Great idea if you want light throughout the night, but I think that a standard energy saving bulb fitted to a timer would use less energy in the long run. It is just as easy to switch a light on before you go out anyway. In some way I think the sensor bulbs defeat the object. Nevertheless, I think they are ok if you really need them. Voted hot.

I don't think that is legal ?:x
Sound like nice and useful bulbs

That's what i thought too about postage,i'm guessing that you would get them replaced if damaged,as big companies like this are usually good at this sort of thing.
