Microdirect are the pits in my experience.

Just a heads up to the original poster, your price should really include delivery (unless there's a free delivery offer, voucher etc) which takes this up to £53.45 as VAT seems to be calculated on unit price plus delivery charge.

Also, congrats on your first deal

Thanks mate, I have altered the post now :)

I have this exact HDD so thought I'd give some useful feedback.

It's fast; no problems there. It's very quiet. I generally never hear it. It is very dark brown, not black, but looks pretty old school (personal taste). It has a Star Trek-esque pulsating light strip on the front to show when the disc is being read or copied too, which is cool and not too invasive.

Only down side is it has an annoying (but I guess energy efficient) power saving mode. It goes to sleep after about 30 mins of not being in use. Then when it comes to accessing the drive again (or even just open a view in Windows such as Windows Explorer which displays the drive along with other drives) my whole PC hangs for about 10 seconds, which can be annoying when you are in the middle of something.

If I installed the included FreeAgent software this may not be a problem, but it works OK without installing the software. On the whole a very good drive.

I bought the 750GB one, lasted about 2 days. Was knocked over gently onto a thick carpet, knackered HDD! So not exactly robust, and because of the rather odd base design, they tip over very easily.
Looks like a good price though

i have had my 500gb one for about a year and half now and have knocked it over more times then i care to remember (bit of a poor design), the hard drive must be on for the best part of 12 hours a day and it still works perfectly. I brought the new version of this drive (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149457) at xmas and i am equally impressed with that.

Hmmmm, not sure that many HDDs can survive a shock such as being dropped, but I'll be more careful now.

Agree completely. Bad experience with these Muppets.
As for the drive, I have had mine over 18 months with no problems

im thinking of getting this but does anyone know if seagates 5 yr warranty as stated in the post is efficient and reliable?? if so, we dont have to care about the microdirect aftersales.

also, would it be better to get the newer version of this drive from ebuyer or would it run similar?

Play.com have it cheaper (even before RAC/Quidco) if you can wait until the 6th, so cold from me

I have this drive as well, the powersaving mode is annoying! Go to play a video file or explore the drive and end up waiting for 10 seconds like poster above for it to do anything. However it has always worked fine otherwise.

Oh, I got mine for £60 from maplins about a year ago, so considering this is online only and now obselete I dont think its that great a price. Wont vote either way.

Cold from me, can see how this stacks up against other deals such as the Tesco 1TB Iomega for £65. If that deal has expired then I would rather wait for the next deal than pay this price.

Not only is it cheaper, but the Play.com drive is a Free Agent Pro, the deal above is a bog standard FreeAgent Desktop. The Pro version on play.com features eSATA, and is a nicer design - I own both the dekstop and pro versions.

Design wise the newer revisions of Seagates drive are significantly better.

I have one of these, or should I say had. Mate knocked it off my desk, landed on the floor and now its ****ed. Was filled with my music, pictures, data backups etc which has now been lost :( Impressed with the play.com price that finlay666 posted!

Oh and for the people with the power save mode issues, apparently opening it up and removing the connection for the front light tends to sort the issues out, pita i know but its one workaround ive seen

thanks for the post voted hot

For those moaning about the power saving mode, if you open the freeagent tools you can change the sleep interval from 30 mins to 5 hours to never.
