    Not saying it's a bad deal; but you can buy a decent 1TB usb3.0 portable for £56.04 - just £16.06 for an additional 500GB.

    I'd say this was more of a portable option too but that can be down to personal choice too i mean if you compare the chunky size of the WD drive mentioned above to the Seagate drive you'd find there's only really one truely fully portable drive there in my eyes as Seagate can is powered from your pc and fits nicely in your pocket then compared to the WD which is something you wouldn't want to do that with and when its classed as portable WD are more limited as an external plug socket is needed for the power supply. The one I linked to is USB powered.
    As you say it's personal choice, some folks definitely feel more secure having their data in smaller containers, and why buy a bigger drive if 500GB is enough?

    I guess the only reason i can think of is if the drives work out only alittle more than paying for a drive half the memory size then maybe its best to think towards the future and get the bigger drive other than that i don't think there's a need to go for a drive at twice the memory size you need also i've used WD drives in the past meaning their older 3.5 and im unsure if they resolved their problem but i encountered over heating problems with them and had to relocate them into new enclosures. :( So i hope they are using cooler drives now or have resolved that previous problem with their SE portable drives.

    I agree the WD drive is quite chunky but it's not massively larger than the seagate - just 14% more volume.
    I've not used WD portables - but didn't see complaints of overheating when I was looking to buy a 1TB.

    OP sorry for the thread hi-jack.

    I agree the WD drive is quite chunky but it's not massively larger;
    the seagate is 8.3 x 11.1 x 1.4 cm = 129 cubic CM
    the WD 7.8 x 12.6 x 1.5 cm = 147 cubic cm - just 14% more volume.

    Also the added bonus that if you remove the Seagate drive from its container it can be used to replace an existing laptop drive but trying to do this with the WD you will find due to their new boards they attatch to their drive this is not possible now. Not really a problem to most people but always a nice alternative to have. I'm not completely sure on this but im guessing due to the connector supplied with the Seagate drive this can also be used on raw drives to transfer data from them too as the connection connects direct to the sata connection like how it does inside a pc but with the benefit of being able to connect a raw drive to pc via usb.

    You know that is the older model right? Changes being size, colour and possibly speed mostly the connector stands out as the free agent go has just a cable that connects to a micro usb connector on the bottom of the drive where the one in this deal is the newer GoFlex USB 3 model which also lets you upgrade to USB 3.0, FireWire 800 or eSATA as the connectors are interchangable and sold individually just incase you were confusing that free agent go model with this newer GoFlex model.

    Maybe due to them replacing an external power for the drive and then making it be powered via USB but even after doing this problems came up on that matter.. http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-Portable-Drives/wd-passport-essential-se-1tb-usb-3-0-appears-and-disappears/td-p/218296

    see if this can help by using the "microsoft fix it" A computer that is running Windows XP cannot detect a USB flash drive, an Apple iPod, or an external hard disk drive

    Be careful of this as the drives inside tend to be OEM and will void the warranty if removed!

    Oh yeah removing any HDD from its enclosure will result in a very high chance of voiding your warranty. lol I mean even upgrading my HDD myself on my laptop voids my laptop warranty XD they never want you to be messing around with internals of computers and replacing things by yourself.
