True, though it's reasonably well known Seagate are the best. Quiet, reliable unlike Maxtor/Hitachi/IBM drives.
#3
Only 2 year warranty unlike the rest of HD which are 5 years:thinking:

I don't think that is true is it ??

Unlike alot of the external drives sold, this has a firewire connection as well as USB, and having had a maxtor onetouch external drive for the last 3 years I can tell you with the utmost confidence that firewire is 100 times better than USB if you are going to be using the drive a fair ammount.

In fact the USB connection on my maxtor broke once and corrupted the drive partition table taking the majority of my files with it! I could still access the drive fine with firewire, and it was unfortunate that I just happened to be moving the drive to take a file to a laptop that was not networked and I only had a USB cable to hand. If I had stuck with the firewire there would have been no problems, the hard disc was fine.

Of course faster sustained transfer speeds on firewire etc ...

Anyway good price! :) Voted hot!

Can you tell which External Hard Drives offers 5 years warranty? :whistling:
#7
firewire is a big advantage if you are shifting massive files
which you must be if you want this big a hard drive

would definitely take this over the maxtor 500GB which is only usb and a quid less
#8
he might mean in comparison to seagate internals?
#9
for a 500GB drive with firewire this is an excellent price! Rep added and voted Hot!
#10
I recently paid more than that for a bare 500GB seagate drive - so this does strike me as a good deal. IMHO Seagate are the best drives.
#11
Voted HOT for the fact it has firewire and 16mb cache. Good deal.

and, you get firewire and usb cables included.

dont have much experience about other hard drives but in my opinion its very quite. these hard drives is one of the very good ones.
and for the firewire this is really a handsome deal. thanks for the OP.
#15
This is a pretty darn good buy, for a known brand, 500GB, and both USB2 and FW400. Many thanks to the OP.

The only other I was considering was the Maxtor OneTouch III which is more expensive. Only buying for the extra FW out port on the back. And now so confused over all the different models.

This Seagate was an easier choice.
#16
Does this have an on/off switch? The Seagate i got from play for the same price doesn't and it's getting on my nerves.

Yes it does, just press and hold the backup button on the front of the drive.

Also it has 2 firewire connections (both fw400) so you can daisy chain another drive, it wil also auto powerdown if not in use after about 10/15 minutes. It also has a nice way to stack multiple drives on top of one another without blocking the airvents. It also has active cooling (it has a built in fan), but it's not that noisy (the play freeagent one has passive cooling).

Hope thats helps.

ordered one. the firewire connection definitely makes it a bargain.

Only usb???
USB2 is 480mb transfer speeds as opposed to 400mb for firewire.I think you're misleading some of the less technical amongst us with that statement!
#22
the reason firewire is better than usb2 is because, usb is theorettically 480 but you only ever get 2 thirds of that, also USB travels via the cpu stressing the pc and making it slow where as with firewire you get 400mbps at all times and it doesnt go through the cpu
#23
Cheers Ommid I didn't know that.
#24
no worries, i use usb2 but i get faster speeds with usb because it has good quality cables and my cpu is quite good. good for laptops as your battery will last longer, the reason companies dont use firewire much on their devices is because Apple has a patent on it so everytime it is used they have to cough up

Thanks aty, the dual firewire is great news (ordered before you let us all know that). This means I can attach a DV cam to the extra port. Cool.

One question, do you have the FreeAgent one? Reason I ask, is that this is also available with FW and if that has an extra port and no fan, this may be a better option.
#26
Replying to my own question. The Seagate website says about the FreeAgent Pro model; "Select models include dual FireWire 400 interface module and cable".
#27
bought one. not sure if my laptop has a firewire connection, it's a new 620m dell. However if it doesn't, does anyone know where to get a cheap PCMIA firewire card? And how much faster is firewire compared to USB2?

assumed most people would have previously heard firewire was faster

Nope... there are both USB/eSATA and USB/eSATA/Firewire versions of the Pro - you need to look at the sticker on the front or make sure you have the correct model number.
