Seagate 750GB Momentus XT Serial 2.5 inch 7200 RPM 32MB 6GB/S SATA III Solid State Hybrid Hard Drive £115.00 @Amazon
Do you want an SSD for performance but really don't want to spend the money on something that just doesn't give you the capacity you need at the same time?
Then this may be for you.
This is a second generation hybrid drive from Seagate that has 750 GB 7200rpm storage drive and an 8 GB SSD memory that caches frequently used files for faster booting and general use.
I bought one of the original SATA II 500Gb drives when they first came out about 3 years ago and placing it into my laptop of the time with it's dismally slow 5400rpm drive and it enhanced performance by an average 100% and is still going strong in my new machine, with never a single hitch.
This second generation drive with 8Gb SSD, increased drive storage and SATA III support looks to be even better.
This is and never will be as fast as an SSD but it's not trying to be.
It's the best of both worlds to give you flexibility.
My first generation boots my laptop in 38 seconds and programs load fast enough for me to feel that it is zippy enough to have been one of my best purchases ever to date.
Key Advantages
• Boots and performs like an SSD1
• Up to three times faster than a traditional HDD1
• SATA 6Gb/s with NCQ for interface speed
• All-in-one design for simplicity and ease of installation
• Works with any laptop or PC, any OS and any application
• Backed by a 3-year limited warranty
Best-fit Applications
• Laptops and mobile workstations
• Desktop and tower workstations
• High-performance laptop and desktop gaming systems
• Small form factor all-in-one PCs

120GB SSD now cheapest 65 quid. runs fast like a rocket. almost half price of this product and you can get a professional external hard drive for back up for the extra money.
For a sample combination,
120GB SSD SATAII 65 quid.

or a faster 120GB SSD SATAIII Crucial M4 for a extra tenner.
USB 3.0 500GB 52 quid.

Glad to see you weren't capable of reading the entire description - its a HYBRID drive with a small SSD built in - ideal for people who don't fancy putting in a separate SSD as a boot drive.
These are more than a little on the pricey side though so I won't be voting one way or the other - I'd rather pick up a cheap, small ssd and a 2tb hdd for a similar price

I think this might be aimed at laptop users as a replacement internal drive. I like your thinking, but not everyone has a removable DVD drive bay or can carry a portable drive around in additon to the internal one.

Very tempted to put this in my laptop.

I myself have 500Gb of mechanical storage with the advantage of some SSD performance, which is a good balance between capacity and performance.
The second generation drives have been too expensive for me to consider up to now but at this price, at this time, I think that it represents good value for money for a flexible solution to cater for two needs, especially in a laptop that for most, will only have space for a single drive.
It's not an SSD and doesn't claim to be one.
ANY SSD
plus
the crappiest, slowest, high-capacity conventional HDDs on the market (2tb 5400rpm green drives)
is a much more cost effective, efficient, utile solution than this.. overpriced jack-of-all-trades POS.

If every laptop could host two drives, I'd be agreeing with you.

I'll just sellotape all these drives to the screen & we're sorted then.
