2.5 are smaller (alot) and only need a USB connection to power it as to a 3.5 bigger and comes with a mains adapter thus needs external power.

I'm looking for something portable that I can connect and power via USB (I'm thinking my car stereo) - are ALL 2.5 hard drives powered by USB? (I also thought it was just the size)
I was looking on the WD website and it wasn't too obvious to me how each of their different hard drives were powered

thanks
#15
can you get portable 2.5 500GB externals? cheap ones?

Do check even some 2.5 can be powered as well i have one that does both mainly if external powered its faster but does USB powered as well

I got this one: for only 49.95

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/597724/WESTERN-DIGITAL-WDBAAA5000ABK?cm_ven=AFFILIATEWINDOW&cm_mmc=AW-_-HotUKDeals-_-links-_-generic

Now because it looked like a one off deal to me it be worth popping in and asking them if they would do you the same for you as they did for me, you never know

The most probable thing he would say is show me proof and he will price match it. Otherwise, he will tell me to get lost.

probably be easier you scan it and put it on a free website that allows you to post pics (http://tinypic.com/) and then give the url of where the pic is OR just email it whoever wants it.

I would probably give it ago at comet!

or I would probably get the medion one for £55 with 3 year warranty

The higher the buffer the better the drive some desktop ones go up the 32mb

but what does buffer mean? youll have to wait ages for the video to play?
#32
The final factor that impacts performance for a hard drive is the amount of buffer on the drive. A drive's buffer is an amount of RAM on the drive to store frequently accessed data from the drive. Since RAM is faster at transferring data than the drive head operation, it increases the speed of the drive. The more buffer on the drive, the more data that can be stored in the cache to decrease the amount of physical drive operation. Most drives today come with a 8MB drive buffer. Some performance drives such come with a larger 32MB buffer

lol im confused, so would this (ebay: 400089343468) be suitable running video files and easy plug and play? would it be alot smaller than the iomega one u think :p does it run on a desktop?
#34
Yes would work fine on an uptodate p.c./laptop

Read more below on the item on ebay "Under what conditions will the drive require extra power from a 2nd USB port? Some older laptops and older desktops may require two USB ports"

Nice 1. I tried my local and none in stock. i checked their website and it showed up as nil in all the surrounding shops.
