Worth a bosh for the PS3?

MissGB16 - You will be able to plug it into an Xbox and play vids etc back but as far as I am aware you cannot use it like the standard HDD (i.e. download games etc on it)

I dont like Play.com very much for some other reasons, but the page states "Manufacturer Warranty: 2 years warranty". So if the drive has problem within 2 years you should be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer right?

I think I paid £60 for this item about 6 months ago. Now £50 is about right for 640GB as you can get the 500GB one for £40 now.

warning about this unit. i took mine from the packaging, filled it with ps3 games and plugged it into my ps3. games worked fine. unplugged unit, re-connected to my pc.

dead, wouldnt boot up, wouldnt display contents. ran the diagnostic tool, "drive needs servicing, return to repair centre."

less than 2 hours use and this hard drive died. on the other hand, the replacement was sent out speedily and i have been using it since without problem.

Why has the drive got no warranty from Play? I don't understand.

You might retitle this one as "portable" if you want more people to realise it's a good deal; as the 3.5" mains powered devices are generally known as "external" and the 2.5" USB powered devices are "portable". I know the site itself is calling it external, but it's a 'portable' drive nonetheless.

It has a manufacturers warranty but you need to deal direct with the manufacturer after the Play.com 28 day warranty expires.

In the UK, the retailers are required to offer 12 months warranty and you deal direct with the retailer.

Because Play are based in Jersey, they only offer a 28 day warranty.

In most cases, a retailer will offer a refund or replacement within 12 months of purchase. I think most manufacturers will try to repair the item and it's likely to be a slow process.

So tempted to return my drive from Amazon when it arrives for this deal.

What you guys think, link to the W/D drive is here

Only reason i can see staying with the W/D is the futureproofing and colour.
