great for storing media which you dont access frequently.

but not very good as a drive you need to get to every day because of the slow usb connection

USB2 is faster than the HD data rate so the USB does not really effect the speed.

It is fast enough for HD recorded video although I would not use it as a boot drive. Perfect for storing your Media.

Not sure. In perfect conditions, USB2 has a throughput of 60MB/s. According to http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/Seagate-Barracuda-1.5-TB,2032-5.html, a Seagate 1.5Tb drive averages a throughput of 98MB/s.

Still beats the hassle of wiring up an external SATA interface.

Maxtor 1.5tb for only £78 at Ebuyer if you're not bothered about brand

98MB/s?

Wow, IDE drives are really crap in comparison to SATA.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/Seagate-Barracuda-1.5-TB,2032-5.html @ 98MB/s was for a sata drive.

That's assuming this external disk uses sata innards.

the samsung deal is cheaper http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/468377/samsung-story-station-1tb-external-/ but amazon is better than cdiscount.

Great! Needed something to store my iTunes library and backups! Heat and rep added.

So drives have speeded up a little in maximum theoretical speed but unless you are using it for editing HD video in decompressed format the data rates should be fine. As you mentioned though the copy might not be as fast as an internal drive due to the USB bottlenecking the drive slightly.

Unless of course you already have an eSata connection.
