please dont say that, you will start the desktop vs portable debate up all over again and we have that million times in the last week.

To the best of my knowledge 1tb portable hard drives are not on sale at the moment so the 1tb drive you have seen must have been a desktop hard drive. Desktop hard drives are a lot bigger than portable and you also have to carry round a power supply with it. Portable hard drives are small and light and can normally fit in a pocket, they are powered straight from the usb port.

Portable hard drives cost quite a bit more than desktop hard drives as small technology tends to do so, so your orignal comment of you have seen 1tb hard drive for a couple of quid more is irrelevant. You are meant to be voting on weather this is a good price for a portable hard drive not on if this is good price for a desktop hard drive.

Here's a link to the USB dock on play.com, so you can see what you are getting:

Seagate Freeagent USB Dock £19.99

Or if you want to roll your own, add a 2.5" drive into this:
2.5" enclosure and dock for £27.99

Deal voted hot.. for the included dock.

is it just be that does not see the point of the dock? what is the problem with a usb cable plus it is not like it will remove a cable from your desk as it is still going to have a usb cable from the dock to your computer, just seems like an extra bit plastic on your desk to me that seagate can charge £20 for.

By the way i still voted this hot and left rep

Yes you could just use the provided USB cable but the dock is a more convenient way to handle multiple drives, it's tidy on the desktop & takes up less space as the drive is vertical.

The other benefit is if you want a portable drive that you could seriously put in a jacket / suit inside pocket as it's very slim and light - depth is just 12.5mm and weight is 160gm

Many of the 3rd party portable cases are quite bulky having to cater for a range of models while Freeagent Go case is dedicated and a snug fit.

While you loose on storage size these portable small drives as a desktop alternative benefit from low power and not requiring yet another PSU & plug socket.

It's full retail product - not even sure if an OEM version exists :)

Really wanted to buy one of these - £59.99 is a great price for a top quality drive plus a free docking station and leather case.

However, as usual, us NI residents are ripped off.

Even selecting free super saver delivery is says postage of £12.99 is the only option to NI. Now I know for a fact that it would not cost £12.99 to post such a small item to NI. It would be the same as postage to mainland UK.

So instead I have reserved one at my local PC World for £59.12 - will just have to do without the docking station.:x

Had this in my basket for a few days (with a few other items, to benefit from the free delivery), but dithered too long. Finally went to order to find the dock and case are no longer free. Doh :x
