Whilst i have no interest in buying such a thing (imminent system software 4.5 allegedly brings external hdd functionality a la xbox) how would a PS4 utilise the flash part of this? Is the OS clever enough to assign it usefully?

There are different benefits. I for one prefer an internal drive because my room is very small and I don't want a tumor chomping more space in my room. An external drive also generates more heat and I'm not sure about the USB speed and is an overkill in HD space for most people. With this SSHD drive you do get increased loads as the great Digital Foundry explains in the following video

However, sadly this deal is the 1TB version which is only a marginal upgrade to the 500GB stock drive (and the same storage as a 1TB, which the pro and half the slims out there already have).

If you plan on upgrade with a faster drive then do yourself a favor and get the 2TB drive. I got mine and am very happy with it

External drive does not generate more heat and I would suggest a much better solution. Complete flexibility on choice of drive. Definitely wait for new firmware on PS4 and go external.

why cold?

First thing I did with my PS4 when I got it was to swap the internal drive out for a 2TB model. Should be the standard given patches, mandatory installs etc, even before you buy digital copies of games.

Of course it generates heat!

Consoles aside, this looks a good solution to upgrade a laptop that doesn't take 2 drives or if you're too skint to fit a large SSD.
