I'm looking for a 500gb external drive. There's some that are cheaper (if you factor in delivery), for example this LaCie one:

Is there any reason why I would pick this drive over the LaCie? I could do with a drive that is completely silent or turns off automatically when I shut down my desktop. And would it not be better to get a drive with 16mb cache?

Just to clarify because I just realised it isn't obvious, by a drive that is silent, I meant silent when not in use. My PC is louder than my Xbox 360 :w00t: so if the drive makes a bit of noise when it's being used it'll make no difference to me! :p

one reason to choose this over the lacie is the fact that Seagate give 5year warranty (even on external drives) whilst lacie only give 1/2 years.

The problem is, these seagate externals run really REALLY hot, they don't have anywhere enough ventilation and they have a massive failure rate. Do a search and you'll see lots of people having them die.

If it's just a drive you download to, then burn stuff off the seagate drives are really good - when (rather than if) they die, you won't have lost any data and you can ship it off to be replaced (which is a hassle). As a storage/backup drive they are next to useless.

Is the problem with these drives when they are left on for long period time?
Do you know which is the best make to go for?

I think lots of people with the overheating issue only used the drives occasionally. Everyone has a favourite drive manufacturer, I have western digital mybook externals that work well (but only 2 year warranty on most drives - 3 on the NAS drives - some of the "studio" models seem to have 5 year). I also have seagate and samsung drives in generic external closures that work well.

I had a toshiba external (was a WD drive inside the enclosure) that only had a one year warranty and the caddy died a few weeks after the guarantee ended (the drive itself is fine though)

I'd say go with whatever is cheapest with the longest warranty. (excluding the freeagent series if it is important data you'll be storing).
