  You sure you're not using them backwards? I've always used the poundland/world ones and never had a problem with them not gripping! They come in about 4 size and colours, and you get around 200 of them in a pack,, all for £1!

  Bigger ones approx 2.5 times longer for a little more money - i thought Set of 40 Black Nylon Cable Ties (HQ) 4.8mm x 245mm - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00923M65I were a very good buy for less than £1 delivered! Much better for bulky cables etc.
