Following on from the handheld posted earlier. Argos have knocked 20% off this version, although this includes 80 games built in and 2 wireless controllers. Seems to be at least a tenner cheaper than elsewhere and stock seems to be plentiful. It can take old cartridges but I don't think it has an SD slot.

I took it back, it was so bad.
The infrared controllers often didn't work when they weren't 100% pointed at the console too.
Save your brass and get a software emulator - most folk will have a few machines (phone, laptop, tablet, etc) more capable than this and Retroarch does a great job with multiple emulators.

I was quite surprised when browsing Wish, I discovered they are selling what seems to be the original Sega Megadrive II for £33

Or you could buy a Mega Drive off of eBay and play MD games the way they were supposed to be played.

Very true... If you don't mind the wires and have the old-style TV inputs.
Tracking down games is a little tougher but at least the experience will be unaltered.
Incidentally, the Argos one is composite video only, in case anyone has too new a TV.

I think people forget that although this can be scrutinised as a product, it is surely meant as a gift, a bit of nostalgia. £39.99 would barely get you one full release these days and nobody is going to pack their ps4 or xbox one up for it. Yes you could buy various devices and emulators which would perform better but ultimately the average joe unwrapping this on Christmas morning would be made up with it.

This is made by AtGames who make some of the worst third party hardware you can think of. Might as well get a Pi2 instead.

If it's for nostalgia, and an actual quality nostalgia console then the Mini NES is the right choice to go with. It's only about £7 more than this.

Is a raspberry pi pick up and play for the masses? I haven't looked into but from what I can see I wouldn't have a clue what I'm doing building one.

Appreciate the nes comment although for someone like myself who went from C64 to master system, mega drive, snes and so on the nes won't hold much nostalgia as I never had one.

New one is out soon. Think it's the same hardware but different selection of games. There is a version with an SD slot but that's made by a different company.

Think it was supposed to be out last month but just checked Funstock.co.uk and it says pre-order for delivery before Christmas. It's £69.99 though but does have better games. It's 25th anniversary edition.

funstockretro.co.uk I meant :)

Thanks for your reply. As someone who knows nothing about these can you tell me what the difference is between this one and the one currently out? (For the extra £20) days guaranteed Christmas delivery so would have to hope that's the case I guess!

It does exactly the same and looks exactly the same. It's just got better games built in. Think there are 40 Mega Drive games and 40 other games built in. It's the 25th anniversary of Sonic so they'll be on there. 3 Mortal Kombats are on there too.
