Hi,

My local Gamestation (Stockton-on-Tees) has some new UMD's for only £1.99 each, and they're also within the 3 for 2 offer. So I bought 3 UMD's for only £3.98! Bargain!

I got Hostel II; Legend of Zorro; and Hollowman.

Others I remember them having were Once Upon a Time in Mexico; Anaconda; Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Amityville Horror, Destination Germany, Lord of the Ringers, and a couple of others.

Just checked, and not showing online, so looks like it's instore only - hope it's not only local to my branch!

Yea, there was a fair few for £2.99 and £4.99 in the 3 for 2 offer too, but I'm a tight-wad, hehe! Wanted to get 3 £1.99 movies, hehe!

These are always on at my local gamestation, chorley

Usually not the best UMD's though.... but i've picked up a fair few over the last 2 years... 60 ish!

Never paid more than £2.99!

it stands for Universal Media Disk it's what the PSP used to play movies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Media_Disc:)

I wish Sony would stop trying to create media formats that we don't need.

don't be there a completely different media to DVD so no there not the same the only thing in common is that they have both can hold movie data :O)

YOu can't play a UMD in a DVD player or visa versa.

well we do need them. It makes watching movies on the go easy if you own a PSP.

Great for watching a late night movie yourself with your earphones in, or if the kids want to sit n watch a film on a long car journey

no. they're good.

Actually UMD is a dead format a bit like like HD DVD. They never sold very well and since they can only be used on a PSP are a bit restrictive. Kinda pointless since you can easily use free software to convert your standard DVDs/avi files into mp4 files to stick on a memory card and watch. Only reason I bought one today was out of curiosity and the fact they're dirt cheap. I was interested to see what the DVD style menu was like.

The only good thing about umd movies, are dolby headphone track & out of the 2 umd movies I have its only on one & that terminator 2. It's sound like 5.1 sound on bog standard headphones, its amazing! I wish there was a way to duplicate it on movies you can convert for the psp:x

UMD is indeed another dead format. Tony Harrison is correct there is free software out there that lets you convert your films(Not movies this is the UK) quickly and easily......

" easily use free software to convert your standard DVDs/avi files into mp4 files to stick on a memory card and watch." Would love to know how ??

I've tried numerous convert software, some free, some costly and found it nothing but a lenghty painstaking task that normally fails or provides sound that is so quite that you can only watch/listen to when there is no background noise.

UMD's are dead but that makes them a bargin price and much better than converting DVD's when you trade them back in it means you pay about a £1 to watch them.

PSP Video 9 is excellent at converting files to PSP format (and its free). You can use the easy to navigate slider panel to auto chose the final quality of your video or manually adjust and tweak it if you want more custom control. It lets you convert movies/tv shows/music vids etc etc at the PSPs full screen resolution of 480x272 and you can choose to have it so you keep the original sound quality.

Comparing some of my converted .avi rips to UMD I actually think the UMD doesn't look as good.

Thanks but I think I'll continue calling them movies just as I have all my life.

oh gotta get me

Once upon a time in mexico - cool film

Off there now - thanks op

Just back from Gamestation

Be careful how this discount is applied

Got me
Legend of Zorro £1.99
The Amityville Horror £1.99
Once upon a time in Mexico £1.99
Total £3.98

House of Flying Daggers £4.99
Donnie Darko £4.99
The Goonies £4.99
Total £9.98
Total for all 6 = £13.96 or £2.32 per film

You must ask to ring them through as seperate 3 for 2s when mixing prices otherwise they will try and charge £16.96 as they discount the 2 cheapest!

Hodsey77 - check your copy of Hostel 2 to see if it has that umd in case and not Hostel 1. I went to buy Hostel 2 and they couldnt find the umd but, had one for Hostel 1! So someone who bought Hostel 2 has Hostel 1 in the case.

sony had to invent a new medium for the psp so they came up with umd. at the time the psp was released there was no cheap way of storing 2gig of data in a portable transportable format. for videos the umd is dead. for games umd is still alive.

i just find it funny how you think hd dvd (no more printing of hd dvd disks let alone movie releases) is still alive but at the same time declare umd as dead.

Fred Head
It's far from dead and with the amount of these sold I would not be surprised if MS get a renewed interest somewhere in this (in some sort of way), and add all the separate players sold I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few future film titles also released as an HD-DVD option.....

comment made a few days ago. same reason you think 7 pounds hd dvd disk is good value is same reason why people buy 1.5 pound umd disks. no need to troll especially when you can't stand sony trolls in xbox/hd dvd posts

Hiya ,

Just checked and we've definitely got Hostel 2 in ours...

I think we were in there when you were - we got a few more £1.99 ones, and some £4.99 ones too... If it wasn't you, then some guy was buying the same UMDs, as I was gutted I didn't see the Amityville Horror yesterday, hehe!

Well done on Hostel 2

Yeah were you trying to pay for with a card for less than £5?

Gave in on the Hostel 2 as they couldnt find it. Replaced with Amityville - although I did try and ask them if I could have Desperado for £1.99 instead of £4.99:oops:

Thanks for the headsup

Haha, yea - spent ages looking and then neither of us had any cash on us! Doh! Had to pop to HSBC and get some money out...

I thought they were taking a long time with you - was surprised when you were still there after we'd left to get money and came back...

Hmm... not sure grilli, but I did manage to find the same ones in the Middlesbrough store for the same price. They also had Charlies Angels for £1.99 too, but they didn't have the 3 for 2 offer on anything less than £4.99 there.

By the way, Pluves1, they had about 5 Hostel 2's in the Boro store, so you may want to pop in there to get that, or get them to send it to the Stockton branch (if they do that?)...

In my local branch they are no longer 3 for 2, but the prices have remained the same....
