I've been looking for a cheap texting solution, out of curiosity. Tried a few applications that claimed they were free but they didn't work. Found FishText, allows the user to send text messages internationally for just over 1p and to the UK for 2p. Your network provider will charge for GRPS access, but this should be around 0.002p per message sent (based on £2/MB which most networks charge). If you have a data plan you could save a fortune.

You also get 20p free credit when you sign up (=20 free UK messages)

If anyone knows a cheaper/free service please add to the thread, I've tried about 10 over the past week and couldn't find a cheaper or reliable one.

Caution

Check your tariffs as every tariff will have a different GPRS proposition & overage rate. This could end up costing more than your standard SMS overage.

It's a good service, been using them for a few months now. Seems to depend on which network you send too also, cant remember which are the pricy networks to send too but there is some that charge 6p ish for 1 text, tho I was able to text my mate while he was in marbella for only 1p tho :D Defo a great service for international texts, the cheapest anyways :)

O yeah and texting to another person who has fishtext is free

I'm currently paying about 20p/text to my bro in Florida from my Vodafone acct. I have no data allowance bundle, so if I use this to his T-Mobile USA phone, will it be around 1p ish? What are VF likely to charge me for it? Currently send around 25-40 texts a month to him.

Normal international texts sent from your phone (as texts not data) are 10p per international text using Blyk, although they are £1 a meg for data which is not too good.

The best price for data is currently Asda mobile who are 20p a meg.

They are probably the nest PAYG too, with calls 8p per min and UK texts 4p.

You can send 50 texts a month for free via the web through BT website, I have tried it and they are sent straight away.
#13
Signed up for this a few weeks and could do with some help.

Followed the download procedure to my motorola v3i phone and everything appeared to go ok but after the download i cant find anything on my phone to access fishtext for sending texts from my phone, so therefor when i send a text from my phone it still goes through vodafone and i get the rip off vodafone rates.

However, i can log on to the fishtext website and send texts from my computer via fishtext at 2p a text and the recipient still sees my name as the person who sent the text which isn't so bad but is a bit of a pain having to go on to a computer to send a text.

Anybody offer any help on what i need to do to get this fishtext on to my phone so i can send the texts direct through fishtext?

it should download and then the application should run after asking you if it can install. have a look in your applications folder. download again if you can't find.

Check out joopz.com if you wanna send to the us/canada - its 2 way, unlike most services so handy if you've got american friends who you want to be able to reply. entirely web based though, so you need a decent browser on your phone. Works great on the iPhone though :)

If ur at home- i signed up to www.1899.com
They give cheap calls globally and are accessed by dialling 1899 after u sign up.
and u can send global sms from any web pc for 1p -fantastic when i wanna send text abroad and when im abroad to send sms home :)

Signed up and voted HOT. My GF can now text me for free, as I have my phone checking FT every 5 mins (I'm on free data), so it costs her nothing.

EXCELLENT!!
the only thing is that you need to have a credit card registered to buy more credit... i would have prefered reverse sms charge or paypal...

So does one have to log on to fishtext from their gprs, log in, compose and then send the text? When they recipient recieves the text, does it appear from your mobile number or is it tagged as its by fish text?

no you don't need to be on their website, you use a little application which runs on your phone to compose a message, when you send the message, it connects to the GPRS for a few seconds and send it that way. The receiver will see your number unless you change it to anonymous in the application settings.

(I am on 3) that should mean that if I am in a free WiFi area, then the phone should access the internet via Wifi (which is free) and not GPRS (which costs me money)

Or have i got that wrong??

hot! just signed up for this.

btw i think it will work over wifi - on my N95 anyway it does. FishText is an java app that uses whatever underlying internet connection available to the phone, and in n95's case it lets you choose wifi or gprs/3g in a dropdown list prior to login, but i do have unlimited data on my plan anyway tho.

Thanks very much!!! I was just looking for a cheap international texting service. Quick question: have you had any problems with some messages not being delivered, or is it a reliable service?

Oh also, do you ever get any spam texts from any companies or anything like that?

AFAIK it uses GRPS access. If you are in a free WIFI area, you could always go to their webpage and send it from there, if you are not able to send it from the application via WiFi. If you are unsure, send them an email, and look at the reply below.

Only 2 messages not delivered but I think there may be a problem with that number... It is a Virgin number and is roaming in Pakistan, but I think my mate has used some diverts through third parties to save on roaming which is preventing the messages getting through. I'm going to raise a ticket to see their response. Secondly, only signed up a few days ago and no spam texts so far.

Thanks for this, everyone signing up for this that does a lot of international calling/texting should invest in a decent wifi enabled mobile phone and/or unlimited data plan and sign up to truphone (best mobile voip...forget fring). And for free video calls i'm told Tivi is good. I've saved so much with truphone, hopefully fish text will save me more as international texts are the only things really costing me to go over my inclusive stuff on my monthly plan @ 20p a time they add up someone told me that they deduct 4 of your inclusive sms for 1 international sms this is rubbish as far as I know there is no plan available with inclusive international sms.
#31
I signed up to this and think it is pretty good esp as it sends messages so so quick...and people recieve the message as though it is from me...@2p a sms in the uk...this may save me some money!

one thing tho...does anyone know of any service to send mms in the uk cheaply from a phone over a data connection?
#32
how much does this work out for on o2 pay and go? i know i get 1mb free a month, but after thats up it charges me so much per kb.... whenever i go on the internet tho, seems theres a minimum 10/15/25p charge?
#33
but on o2 if u top up £10 u get 300 free anyway ?
#34
aye, i use about 200

but, if i could use the free ones one month... and then wondering how many txts id get with the 10 quid next month... reason being i rarely call and just end up wasting my credit... if i could get 2 or 300 txts for a tenner off gprs id only have to top up every 2 months instead of every 1

Does anyone know how much the data charges are on t-mobile contract to set fish text on automatic check to allow free incoming sms from another fish text user.

i.e. if i wanted to use fish text purely to recieve free sms from other fish text users (which would be free for them) what would my data charges be per month.

Thanks.

Works well over my WiFi :-)

According to the site 0.0005p each time it check for messages based on your network charging £2/meg so you can do the maths by determining how often to check for messages. If you have the £1 a day unlimited or £5/month unlimited then you don't need to worry about the GRPS costs
