I had the CX55's about a year ago, they sound awesome! Paid around £40 at the time. Good price, heat added!

I am tempted but I don't know I can justify spending £40 on earphones. How much difference are they going to make on an mp3 player?

Upgrading your headphones make a huge difference. The ones that come with most players are cheap and rubbish.

These are a good choice if you are going to upgrade. They are rated very well even up against much higher priced sets. Have a look here at Stuffs review -

This statement is correct only if you're deaf. If you can hear a passing train though a pair of good headphones will make a big difference

MP3 is lossless, so spending very high amounts for just MP3 use is pointless. Under £50 and you probably notice a difference if using a good MP3 player (not iPod) and encoding with high quality Lame VBR.

If using an iPod, particularly with music downloaded from iTunes then I'd say spending £50 is probably overkill.

It's obviously a matter of opinion and how much you are in to your music.

I'm a good amateur musician and have a critical ear when it comes to performance. Despite this I can't usually tell the difference between mp3 at 320kbps and lossless and I suspect many people are the same, even if they say that they can.

I can, however, tell the difference between good quality headphones and bad. I've had bundled headphones, PX100's, CX300's/500's. Klipsch 1's and 2's and several others as well.

After years of spending £30/£40 at a time to get that elusive sound quality I recently bought some Sennheiser IE8's at £150. The difference is like night and day. I wouldn't listen to my mp3 player with anything else now. Well worth every penny.

I realise some people don't agree, but I guess that they won't have tried the more expensive headphones so can't comment with authority. Anyone who has tried something like the IE8's with decently encoded music on a decent player (I have a Sony) and says that they are no better than something costing £30 shouldn't be commenting on the subject.

Simply proves my point. Stick to what you know and don't give bad advice based on ignorance.
