No profile 2.0, but still a decent player.

Had no idea about 'profiles' ...if like me..you might find this link useful...

I was given the HP21 by my granny a couple of days ago (she said she'll never need it) and it seems a decent bit of kit. Apparently very similar to this one, and has profile 1.1.

Profile 2.0 is only a huge deal if you are in to your advanced features and download content (I suspect many of us are not). Otherwise, 1.1 should be okay really, so long as films don't start requiring profile 2.0 and higher!

I wouldn't worry about profiles. I'd worry that the problems this machine has/had are getting fixed by Sharp.

Sony provides updates to my player. 3 so far. Check to see if Sharp do and if they don't get the Sony as the price isn't that much more.

Get a PS3

You can get firmware updates no problem, but they don't update the profiles. I have an updated firmware sat on my desktop atm, which I got from Sharp the other day.

As for getting a PS3, yes - it's a fairly good idea. But not if you value your media setup in terms of appearance - the PS3 is hideous and looks absurd next to a nice receiver or HTPC :-D

I owned one but didn't like it.

Compared to both my PS3 and the Samsung Blu-Ray player I now own the Sharp is painfully slow at loading discs, loading the main menu (and running it, Spiderman has awful frame rates on the menu screens) and accessing chapters.

Even with the latest firmware it's still very slow and clunky. Also, with no Ethernet or internet access you can't use any online content (Such as Transformers downloadable skins), even with the latest firmware.

There's a reason the price of this player keeps falling.

I agree with the downloadable content aspect, but I do wonder how many people actually use it. Like when DVDs have a second disc ... I've never once looked on one!

I've not had an issue with loading times - it's got the fast loading system, that is a good deal quicker than more expensive players.

As a basic player with 24Hz, I'd say it's a logical option for a huge majority of people - better than a naff looking Bush for sure!

When compared with my current Blu-Ray player it's very slow.

Which model do you have? I'm wondering if the HP21 that I have is that much quicker than the older 'quick load' feature. The HP20 is quite 'old' in technological aspects and I suspect your model Samsung is newer!

Almost certainly, mine was the HP20 (Same as the one in this deal) and was one of the launch models in that range (BOught it in the New Years sales at the start of 2007)

I see. Only I read that the 'quick load' feature was carried across. Evidently improved somewhat then. However, the one Richer Sounds were touting in their posh little media room (a Sony), took an eternity to load, and that had a tag of £300 :?

I'm happy as anything with the Samsung one I've got now (BDP-1500). Loads fast and is smooth playing.

OK you have to buy a cheap 2GB USB stick to put in the rear to act as a storage device for the downloadable stuff but they're cheap from eBay.

I just wish it had Wi-Fi as running a 5 metre Ethernet cable from my Home Hub along the skirting board from another room isn't the most asthetically pleasing of things.

This was £98 recently from bargain crazy.

Good deal if you missed out on the bargain crazy offer

If you live near Wrexham, the Sharp Outlet Shop in Llay has these for less than 130 (I just cant remember how much less). Also, you might get lucky and pick up one of their 160gb HDMI PVR for £20! They don't always have stock of those.

I have been looking for a blu-ray player recently and have been advised by 2 seperate salespersons instore in currys to, in their opinion, avoid sharp players at the moment as they seem to be the one that has caused customers the most problems.

For the price might be worth a try, but personally I would go for the samsung 1500 which is actually cheaper or a more expensive sony model.
