Nominated for seven Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Morgan Freeman), The Shawshank Redemption is an extraordinary tale of hope, friendship and survival inside a maximum security prison.

Based on a story by globally renowned novelist, Stephen King (Carrie, Misery), this beautifully crafted movie features powerful performances from the entire cast led by Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins and ultimately provides an uplifting message about the power of the human spirit and the value of hope.

One of the best selling titles in the UK, this feature film is available on Blu-ray for the first time. Enjoy the high definition while watching one of the best movies of all time.

Yes, recorded on film that has a far higher resolution than Blu-Ray.

As for the quality of the film it should be good and probably the same as this review http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/683/shawshankredemption.html

Says in that US review that it has English: Dolby TrueHD 5.1, if it has the same audio as the US version then that is HD sound.

I rented it from Tesco on blu ray and was really impressed with the transfer. Yeah, you got some grainy shots but I've seen far worse transfers.

I'll deffo be buying it, fantastic film!

Pretty much EVERY movie is shot in higher than HD, only things that aren't HD are things filmed on video, i.e. 80s tv series.

I'm sorely tempted as I love this film but I'm going to be strong and wait until the new year, prices will still be low then I reckon.

films are shot in 35mm film, blu-ray quality is still no where near as good as that, but its getting close. all they do is go back to the original recording and downscale it so it will fit on a blu-ray, and try to improve the picture wherever possible
#13
Great price, very tempted by this but think I am going ot order the beautiful looking R1 Blu-Ray book version

will that work in our blu-ray players, or PS3s? it looks awesome and only $20!

Each frame on a Bluray has ~2MP of data. Each frame on a 35mm film (film dependant of course) has around 20MP of data. We are nowhere near the detail film is capable of resolving.
#16
So we have to wait for HD Blu-Ray DVD for the real high quality?

true, but chances are you wouldnt be able to see that much difference unless you have massive screen

the Japanese makers of Ultra High Definition Video say you would be able to tell the difference on screens above 100inches. The interviewer responded saying that most people wouldnt be able to fit a 100inch tv in their living rooms. They responded by saying "People have walls dont they?" haha

Only standard DD 5.1 audio on the UK release, missing some extras too.

The one I ordered was this:-

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Q67876

Standard shipping was $6.48 but they sent it out expediated shipping (normally around $10.00)at no extra cost:-D total is approx £17.

Ok, not as cheap as this offer but if its true the uk version only has standard 5.1 DD then the US version is a must over this one:-D plus you get the extra content and collectables, so you do get more for your money in that respect. although to some both the sound and extras wont matter to some people.

When you consider that most people will be watching these films on 32" - 42" HD TVs then you are getting an awful lot of information onto that small screen with Blu-ray.

A cinema screen is obviously a great deal larger. Therefore the downscaling is probably in scale with the screen size.

top film!

Lol, I bet you think it will make you popular saying that.:-D

Love the film but totally cannot see the point of owning this on BluRay. I have it on DVD and paid a couple of quid for it. I cannot for the life in me justify forking out a tenner for the BluRay version of a film that cannot take full advantage of the format. I mean we are not talking about a glitzy action blockbuster here....it's a prison drama for heavens sake. How good do you need it to be? How many times do you need to own the same film?

The sort of films transferring over to BluRay really is ridiculous...but the stampede to buy these films is equally incredible, In the words of Harry Enfield's trendy rip off merchant shop keeper " Ahhhhh Shawshank Redemption on BluRay....well you could have had a perfectly acceptable copy of this on DVD for £2, but seeing as though I saw you coming, you can have this BluRay version for a tenner".

Exact same reson why I didn't buy it.

There are some hardware mods that can make some Blu Ray players region free but no software/code mods AFAIK, also some people in the U.K. own US Blu Ray players.
