For those of you that dont know, one of THE best films ever made!!
Well worth the money in my opinion!
City Banker, Andy Dufresne, arrived at Shawshank Prison in 1947, convicted of two brutal murders, he received a double life sentence. He discovers that when they send you to Shawshank Prison for life...that s exactly what they take. Within the confines of Shawshank, Andy forms an unlikely friendship with the prison "fixer" Red. He also becomes popular with the warden and the prison guards as he is able to use his banking experience to help the corrupt officials amass personal fortunes. With an extraordinary twist in the tale, Andy finds that survival comes down to a simple choice; get busy living or get busy dying.

I have always thought that "The Shawshank Redemption", does not belong at the top of the list for greatest film of all time, where its been so many times. But this is the sort of film that sneaks up on you. For the most part of the story, you watch unpleasant things happen to a man who clearly does not deserve it. And every time you're about to throw in the towel and conclude that this is all just too depressing, this man does something remarkable - something that convinces you that he's going to find a way to survive. When the film's conclusion starts to unfold, you suddenly realise that this is the most spirited film you have seen in a long time.
So perhaps in that respect, this does deserve to sit at the top of that list. It certainly convinced me to change my mind. This film is about time, patience and friendship - not riveting qualities, perhaps, but they grow on you during the nice pace of the story, which is about how two men serving life sentences in prison become friends and find a way to fight off despair. The story is narrated by Morgan Freenman, who has been inside the walls of Shawshank prison for a very long time. This is by no means a depressing film, although I may have made it sound that way. There is a lot of life and humour in it. Friendship and trust. And above all things, hope. Hope can be redeeming, hope can make you hold on and fight for what is right. "The Shawshank Redemption" is hope. It is friendship. It is beautiful film making. Own it. Julieanne Hill, HMV Donagal
