Sasha, if there was a non halal jerk equivalent you know of that's ready to cook?

I use a pressure cooker to steam for about 900g for about 14 mins, then I grill each side on about 230 degrees. Amazing results!!

No, I don't know of anything non halal as I'm vegan.
But I'd suggest buying free range chicken that's killed in a non halal way and season it yourself for a more conscious treat?!

Feel for you Sasha, but I prefer convenience. And this is proven to be very tasty and quick. No seasoning required, slam it in and bang. Wow

Snowflake, used to loads. But since now trying to lose 10kg and cook and eat healthy, prefer to cook my own. I'm gettin good too. Invited pals round to try this, they loved the jerk chicken. The pressure cooker steaming makes it fall right off the bone, keeps it moist and juicy. The grilling makes the outside crispy. Lovin it I am.

Halal = Cruelty

Not sure why my comment was deleted!
You can close your eyes to the suffering but it doesn't mean it's not there!

Sasha, I hear ya, but I'm not gonna be a veggie. I love my steak and chicken and fish far too much. Open to non halal jerk chicken alternatives but you didn't suggest any to try...

I'm also vegan but I can assure you that non halal is just as cruel. There's no cruelty free way of murdering.

Redduck, I eat duck too in Chinese restaurants occasionally. Doesn't mean it's unlawful.

How does Halal = Cruelty? Any slaughtering is Cruelty!

Carcass which retain blood is prone to diseases which can be transferred to the human body. Halal meat is drained of blood before being carved up. Thats what I have researched.

Halal is kind of irrelevant, a lot if meat is slaughtered in halal conditions but not labelled as such. Iirc 90% of new Zealand lamb is halal but then labelled for the target market.

Non halal is also barbaric, and I'm a die hard carnivore. I'll eat pretty much anything, but I won't pretend it somehow had a nicer death because no prayers were said over it.

What about kosher meat?

Animals are "supposed" to be stunned before slaughter so that they don't feel pain. Halal slaughter houses are allowed to bypass this and slit the throat of the animal and let it bleed to death without stunning. It think several halal slaughter houses do now stun the animal and then slit it's throat. Not sure what happens in terms of chickens though.

Can you tell me how you use a pressure cooker to cook the meat please? Do you have to add water & keep these raised inside or something? (Total novice here :)

yes. water and chicken raised off the water. then cook. can be grilled/in the oven or fried.

as an aside 90% of halal is pre-stunned . so other than the prayer (bismillah) its not that different from non halal slaughter.

kosher and halal both end up in uk food chain. kosher is 100% unstunned.

Neilboy use about 200ml (about 3 cups of water) in your pressure cooker. Make sure the chicken is above the water. I use a steamer tray from a halogen oven - it has "feet" so it's always above the water line. My settings are on auto, other pressure cookers may have specific heat settings. I do mine for 14 mins for chicken on the bone. It's absolutely soft, tender and juicy at the end. All you need do then is grill it for one minute on each side at high heat, about 230 degrees - and boy oh boy - you've got yourself amazingly delicious jerk chicken crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside - not bad for £3.50 and only 20 mins !!

Also, if you have a meat thermometer, chicken is cooked if the temp reads at 160-165F.

'90% of halal food is pre-stunned' - stunning aint looked on favorably as menna be about welfare and no suffering for the animal at the end, throat slit is supposedly most painless (Vets will disagree somewhat, but when science crosses religion...always a bit of cop out not to offend people). Shame what you dont read about enough is mechanical slaughter is used by in large, especially on chicks, with 'blessed' blades and prerecorded 'bismillah' playing - hit and miss game that on the painless, but hey...as long as its branded halal, bucks still made, whats a bit of haram between friends :)
