other than price how is it better than lightroom or topaz (cant remember name)?
It's not, DxO is another tool to use which compliments Lightroom etc. DxO is almost a single click solution to producing great results. Download the app and see for yourself.
cheers, trying to avoid downloading so much crap on my limited space but will maybe give it a whirl.

edit: quite liking it tbh but is a bit slow to apply changes and could use a gradient filter at least

as pete_I said this isn't intended to replace photoshop, but to make the best from a RAW photo image this is hands down the BEST you can get, you can even make a profile for every lens you own. I was amazed when i first used this all those years ago on how much it brought my pictures to life just by calibrating my camera and lenses.

Be aware that this is certainly not a Photoshop replacement. All it is intended to do is correct (raw) images according to the model of camera and lens you use. It is intended for DSLR users. While it can alter colour / contrast / saturation of a "happy snap" photo, there are many less complicated and smaller applications that will do this.

If you want to see exactly what this will do and who it's intended for, here's the PDF manual:

Does this have the lens profiles for common sony lenses that correct for distortion?

The selection of lenses for DXO is pretty good, including for Sony cameras. Some rare Minolta lenses are missing though, such as 24F2.8, 35F2.0, 100F2.0, 200F2.8, which I'll miss.

The lenses profiled in Capture 1 is more limited, mainly Sony pro/semi-pro grade lenses, with a few Sigmas for good measure

Sigma Sony E:
19mm f2.8 EX DN
30mm F2.8 EX DN
60mm F2.8 DN

Sony
50mm F1.4
E 18-‐55mm f/3.5-‐5.6 OSS
E PZ 16-‐50mm F3.5-‐5.6 OSS
FE 28-‐70mm F3.5-‐5.6 OSS
50mm F2.8 Macro
Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2 ZA SSM
Carl Zeiss Vario-‐Sonnar T* 24-‐70mm F2.8 ZA SSM
Carl Zeiss Planar T* 85mm F1.4 ZA
70-‐300mm F4.5-‐5.6 G SSM
E 50mm F1.8 OSS
100mm F2.8 Macro
85 mm F2.8 SAM
35 mm F1.4G
Carl Zeiss Vario-‐Sonnar T* 16-‐35mm F2.8 ZA SSM
Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 135 mm F1.8 ZA
DT 11-‐18 mm F4.5-‐5.6
DT 16-‐50mm F2.8 SSM

Thanks for the info. I've downloaded dxo now and it does indeed correct for my sony 18-55 sam and 35mm f1.8. I just need to figure out how it all works! With this, Photoshop elements and iPhoto on my Mac, it's getting quite confusing!
