Just got one for Nikon D40 from my local store and realized that this is S-TTL version not i-TTL
Took couple of pictures and it seems to work. Should I be worried about S-TTL?
#2
about two years ago I paid £130 for this, I sold it last year for £80 after light use.

This is an excellent price, I think I might buy another. Heat!

would this suit my canon 40D?

I would say this is compatible with almost any DSLR, check the manual tho.

This is S-TTL version. Canon version is E-TTL but then again as I wrote in my 2nd post, I'm not sure if it will work with other cameras. I have tried with my Nikon D40 and it with ideally. Took couple of shots and it seems to work but I would appreciate if someone could confirm this from professional point of view

Good question, Mudds. The jessops website quotes the canon af mount at £100 more!! I wonder what the difference is, and if there's any way around it?!

edit- obviously a point of some discussion. The sigma website talks about the compatibilty of the specific mount versions, but I'd be interested to hear from anyone with experience of using the sigma mount with a canon.
#8
I see the S is the Sigma mount but really need to know the difference. Thanks for your reponses to my post (rep added)

These are sold as dedicated models, hence the sigma camera version is so cheap as they no longer make/sell Sigma SLR. Surely it will not work properly (or at all) on other manufaturers cameras, the systems are completely different ie. the lens won't talk to the flash.

I think at best it will 'flash', but you'll lose all the advanced features and control. Depends if your camera has more than one control method available.
#14
Surely "dedicated" means exactly that.

Sigma DSLR cameras were never popular and there aren't many around - that's why this is cheap. The popular fittings for Canon and Nikon are a lot more money - that's 'cos there's a market for them.

Frankly, I can't see this item fitting (let alone working) with anything other than a Sigma DSLR. If you've got such a beast, this is a bargain.

I'll stick to my manual Metz Meccablitz for the moment.

Good Spot though.

The offer is for a sigma dedicated EF-500 which will only work properly with a sigma camera. It can be used off camera as a slave either at full or 1/16th power with any make of camera. And the guide no is a bit optimistic too, closer to gn35.
This offer was posted last week but seems to have been pulled. Iirc someone managed to get a canon version at £30, use TCB or quidco and 5-10% voucher listed here bringing it under £28.
#16
Not even good for off-camera I'm afraid. Only full and 1/16th powers. :-( if it had been the 'super'...
#17
I am using this flash with my canon DSLR and it is a canon mount. If this model is a dedicated one for sigma but still it can be used as a slave flash. I will buy one at this price as i have paid £80 last year.

Just ordered this through Warehouse Express. They will price match giving reducing their price by 125% of the difference.

Warehouse Express Price = £99.99
Jessops Price = £29.97
Difference = £70.02
125% of Difference = 87.52

Price Match Price = £12.47

ok so there was a £3.99 delivery charge but still only £16.45 delivered.
To me that is a bargain - may not give me full functionality on my 400D but for a slave you can't go wrong!
#19
Just rang warhouse express to do that and they won't agree to price beat for me! :-(

Just tried calling them and they wouldn't pricematch as it is not available online and because it is clearance item.
#22
Tried responding to your previous post but it said that my response was going via a moderator. That was few hours ago; I'm not sure why but possibly as I directly linked to the item and price match policy as requested.

They wouldn't price match online to me as it said out of stock, I had to advise them of a store which had it in stock which I did as Canary Wharf had them in London. Once Warehouse Express confirmed that Jessops had it in stock it wasn't a problem and they matched.

Not sure if they've changed stance from there if they've had a few HUKD people phone up. To sell an item which they've got listed for £99.99 for £12.46 must be a big hit for them!

Mine is due for delivery tomorrow so fingers crossed they don't cancel it!

Item received this morning by citylink. £16.45 deliverd. BARGAIN!

#25
I noticed that and wondered if they would pick it up but it doesn't state on Jessops page that it is clearance (at least it doesn't if you just search for ef500).

Bit gutted tho - Jessops have reduced their price to £19.97 today so if Warehouse Express had matched 125% of the difference they would have actually had to pay me to take it away!
