They're bad ports because Konami [somehow!] lost the final version of the source code Couldnt make this stuff up.
No you don't have to put up with it since:
a) You're sending a message that you're willing to buy any crappy port as long as they upscale it.
b) You can get undoubtedly the best version these games on the PC which are truly HD and will run on any old graphics and still look great.

Agreed, if you really must buy a shoddy port then at least buy it second hand. Sony do a wonderfull job of their HD remasters on PS3, those should be purchased, stuff like this shouldn't.

Are they really that bad? I was thinking of buying this. I have the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus set and I thought that looked great.
Most HD releases are really good, like the the Metal Gear and God of War collection that I recently played but unfortunately Konami botched this one because they had lost the original code so what they've done is basically hacked the PS2 version of the game to run on the PS3. There isn't one big game breaking thing just loads of smaller things like the fog disappearing in SH2 which doesn't stop the game from playing on but breaks the atmosphere and these games are all about that. It's like death by a thousand cuts.
However, if this is the only way for someone to experience this games then buy it by all means, but be aware that there are better alternatives out there if you want the best experience, and these great games, especially SH2, in terms of atmosphere and makeing you go 'WTF was that?' and should definitely given a go.
