Not sure this is a good deal....the JL offer over Black friday (HP 15, i3-4005u 8gb, 1tb) was £249....so the same spec and 2 years warranty for £80 less.....might be worth looking round for cheaper...

Noticed amazon do have the i5-5200 model for £334.99 which seems a better deal...

I can say I have not purchased this machine. However this model number does not list backlit keyboard as a feature on any sellers websites or on Acers own pages, it appears to be a feature on models higher up in the range for the UK market. However, I think the OP has been a bit keen in their assumption that it might have backlit keyboard, as like most computers these days, the same outer shell often gets used across many different models and variants.
It turns out you are right - I received mine today and there is no backlight, so I've updated the first post. Still quite happy with the laptop though.

Has anyone been able to confirm if this model has a backlit keyboard?

I can say I have not purchased this machine. However this model number does not list backlit keyboard as a feature on any sellers websites or on Acers own pages, it appears to be a feature on models higher up in the range for the UK market. However, I think the OP has been a bit keen in their assumption that it might have backlit keyboard, as like most computers these days, the same outer shell often gets used across many different models and variants.

I think you're right. Looking for backlit keyboards amongst lower priced laptops is a bit hit-and-miss. Going off internet forums, it seems that the trouble is that there are two versions of this laptop; one with and one without backlit keyboard. Lenovo do the same - only some have it which leads to quite a lot of confusion... :(

I'm looking for a budget laptop with backlit keyboard which can be used outside at night..

Thanks OP for posting this deal. It's still a good price for the machine even without a backlit keyboard.

Best option would be to buy a machine that you are interested in and that has a sister model in the same range with backlighting and add it yourself as an after modification.

Eg http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Keyboard-Acer-V5-552PG-V5-572PG/dp/B00HCBCG1G to add to this machine. I'm sure a UK layout is possible to source, just did a quick google to get that link.

Alternatively you could consider a high spec and good condition machine from a refurb outfit that offers the backlit keyboard or a keyboard light. Eg a Dell XPS or Inspiron as these come with backlit keyboards on some models and regularly come up on Dells outlet. Or something like a business line machine such as a HP Probook or elitebook or the Lenovo Thinkpad as these come with LED lighting such as this t430.

will run multiple things at once without performance drop - yeah ok. eg games - hell no. not that you need to run anything else while trying to play a game but they do tend to take all the system performance you can throw at them. if you'd said anything else that statement would be acceptable.

OK. you lot do not know what your on about.

I own the i5 version of this, that I paid about £510 or something from a deal on here a year ago. what your getting for this model is a gaming laptop that will play ANY current gen title at high settings (some on ultra) which surpasses current gen consoles (PS3 and 360) and will even be up there with the PS4 in terms of graphical quality when it comes out... its also a really well built machine and the screen really isn't that bad.. plus you can connect it via HDMI to another screen. This is a fully fledged Gaming PC which is so light you can pick it up in one hand and also a great every day laptop which you can get 6-7 hours use out of on battery. Caveat is to game with it you need it plugged in otherwise the GPU throttles so framerates suffer.

I have modified mine with Windows 8 installed onto the 20GB SSD (takes up about 17.8gb of it) and use the 500gb hdd for program files and storage etc. its lightning fast and boots up from cold in a few seconds. I'd also downloaded a modded bios and switched the screen quality up from 18bit to 24bit - which after testing really makes a difference to the screen density.

All in all, this is worth £400, but it depends what your requirements are.

the ssd is used for fastboot after sleeping...

You are faster shutting down and rebooting than waiting for sleep to recover. Painfully slow on an SSD.

£400 for a Sandy bridge @ 1.5GHz, no thanks.
I imagine that will bottleneck the GPU for gaming; strange combination.
Yes, this is not a serious gaming laptop, it's OK for casual gaming and to make it worse, the CPU is a BGA type( soldered), it can not be upgraded, I believe the retailers getting rid of these to make way for Haswell laptops soon to be released.

Arrived today, astonished at how small, but fast this is for office/home applications. Ordered from Acer with free and excellent wireless keyboard and mouse.
voted hot here.
great spec upgrade for £100
I think some people are comparing it to this deal and don't think 50% more RAM, 100% more HDD, Windows 7 and a wireless keyboard and mouse is worth the extra money. I think for £50 more it's a no brainer now that the other deal is £150 and even when it was at £130, it's still a fair deal, but, the people have spoken.
Why is this being voted cold, is it just because people are looking at the older cheaper deal which isnt as good considering the more being bundled in here?
My laptop has recently died due to overheating and am thinking of this (& probably a small notebook or ipad) as a replacement, any ideas?
Cheers
rickwebtest
So for an extra 70 pounds you get....

50% more RAM, 100% more hard disk space, wireless keyboard / mouse and windows 7
The choice is yours......

..XBMC seems to work better on W7 than Linpus Linux.
It does, just enabled hardware acceleration in XBMC (only in windows 7)

GPU acceleration is fully supported in Linux as well. XBMC runs faster and better in Linux as there isn't the CPU/Ram overhead of Windows running in the background.

XBMC runs fastest as a Live installation.

not being funny but save yourself £200 or so and just buy a PS3.
basergorkobal
There's a reason why these are constantly on sale you know. And that reason is quite simple really. Thie looks like a gaming PC, but isn't one. The whole platform is outdated. The dual-core i5 is not a future-proof CPU for a gaming machine and cannot be easily upgraded. As mentioned above, the GPU is completely pants. It's no use for even entry-level gaming.

Describe entry level gaming, this machine is able to run almost every game on mid settings 720p so I think this is entry level gaming PC also it can be easly upgraded - it has got not bad PSU and 2xPCI E and if we're speaking about this PC as a gaming machine i5 CPU is more than enough. Also it is worth to mention this one is on sale but selling rate is very good and all stock last deal from ebuyer has been sold out.

I actually think it is a good deal. Considering you see many off the shelf PCs using embedded graphics, rather than a dedicated one. Also the Core i5 is more than capable. It may not be the latest gen, but it is still a good performer and you will get a good 2 years of use out of this PC if you upgrade the graphics.

Expect to see other deals like this:

The price is actually £599.98 (Reduced from £599.99!!!).

Deal doesn't deserve to be cold; although I'd hope to get more from £600 that's probably unrealistic ;)

Decent spec as thedoc says.

However Dell are doing a 17" Vostro 3750 with on-site warranty same CPU and W7 Pro but smaller HDD and integrated graphics for around the £550 mark with a £30 code on Quidco (plus another 10% cashback potentially).

Deal certainly doesn't deserve to be at -39.

I agree and £50 more Dedicated Nvida 1GB graphics and an upgraded HDD Is not that unreasonable...
I think integrated graphics with a otherwise powerfull machine is a bit of a let down if you ask me, but thats just my opinion.

as per most modern netbooks/laptops 11.6", 12", 13", 15.6" and 17" they are mostly shipped as widescreen even monitors nowadays are the same. I dont think you can buy the original ratio anymore. I use my 11.6" for email, wordprocessing, spreadsheets, and even a little photoshop and no problems. But I do Admit that 10" netbooks are difficult to use 1024 x 768 resolution, which means its usless for the above apps (requires alot of zooming in and out). But I do not think that acer has these issues, but then again i have 20/20 vision...for now.

I've got an Aspire One with a similar sized screen. While it's plenty powerful enough I hardly ever use it. Basically, the screen is long and thin, which is competely useless for browsing and working with documents since these are all meant to be viewed in portrait mode.
When it comes down to it, netbooks are really just glorified video players. Though they're great for that, their screens are the wrong shape for anything else.

You will get cold votes just because its an Acer laptop, seems to be an easy target for the haters on here. I have the model up from this the 8935G, great machine wizzes through everything I have tried and plays the latest games at a decent resolution.
