Average price for a celeron, these days you could aim for an i3 for sub 300.
First thing you need to consider is what you want to do on it. Then what you might want to do on it.

I'm aware that's a predictable comment, but it proves to be a stalwart in this type of question/thread.

To be honest you might be better putting something in requests rather than deals as well as trawling through the ones already posted...

Happy hunting!
I'd not want to pay any more than £240 for that sort of spec, the main weakness being the Celeron CPU

Interesting... Amazon thinks that Celeron B830, Pentium 980 and Core i3 2330 are the same, got the same reviews for all 3!!! Easy ways to cheat people
This hasn't expired, I accidentally pressed expired with my stupid tracker pad on my (dell) laptop...
I bought this with the B960 CPU for £200 over new years from buyer (eBay shop). Perfect for everyday computing, watching HD streams (xbmc) and even some gaming (low Res). All it needed was a cleanup (90-odd startup items which I halved) and voila. Battery life is pretty decent too. Just dont think of upgrades as the chassis may fracture if not opened carefully.

I also got one from Comet for £629 (10% discount pre windows 8 launch). This was 2 weeks pre administration.
We can claim the VAT back as well through our company, so brings the price down again very nicley.

I do a lot of processor intensive photo batch runs in Photoshop, so wanted a fast laptop for when not at home.
I use astro imaging software as well, which again is very intensive on processor, so the spec of this laptop is perfect for this.

It chews through data like a chewy thing that chew things for a living :-)

I'm not big into gaming, but the Need for speed series runs very well on it. Not sure how the latest and greatest games would be.

In a laptop personally I really don't see the point in windows 8 tile system. Phones, tablets etc yes, but laptop I'm not so sure.

HTH

I got this from Comet on the 16th of last month and paid this price, looks like I should of waited a little longer. Not too bothered as it is an awesome laptop, I've upgraded it to 16GB ram and replaced the hard drive with a 256GB SSD.

IS it any good? im thinking of buying it....and replacing the hdd with a ssd one...does it make it much better? and whats it general performance like? i wwas thinking of keeping the ram the same as 8gb is more than enough

The advantages of an SSD for a general user are:

1. Boot time
2. Application start/disk interaction operations.

The HDD is the slowest common used component in a PC so even old machines see a performance boost.

The main issues are:

1. Reliability, SSD's can wear out although the current ones are much better.
2. Cost/GB of storage, SSD's are still about 10x the price of a HDD for equivalent capacity.

wow that's true..... eek!
Shame it's one of the oldest Atom CPU's , I've got one in my Dell mini9 and while it's good for travelling, it's not great or at all speedy for everyday computing.... just about good enough I'd say.
OP - don't be getting cheap thrills of it being an "UNLOCKED 3G" - you can pickup USB 3G dongles for a few pounds at most....

if you are not watching discs you have ripped toa central location, what is the point of XBMC...I agree ripping them is time consuming and mundane, but when you have access to 2000 films without having to get off of the sofa...youwill realise there is no other way to watch a film
I bought the white one for £249 off Amazon. Not had a chance to set it up yet but it will be used purely for XBMC. I looked at the Revo but this seemed a better option to me as it has a DVD drive. Just means I can still watch my old discs without the need to rip them all onto the hard drive. I may still do this in time but don't want to do it straight away.
keep an eye on amazon who have reduced the white version to 250 a couple of times recently

I don't know if you have tried these extra steps to make text size better in Vista, but in case you haven't:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Make-the-text-on-your-screen-larger-or-smaller

Near the bottom there are two extra methods:

To create a custom DPI scale
To make text and on-screen items clearer in programs that aren't designed for high DPI

But I agree that when it comes to monitors, bigger is better. Just it's handy having high res for video and photographs on a laptop.

But then it'll cost more than a little more... :-(

P.S. I was maybe unfair to alasrati saying "silly comment" - I've not used Windows 7 - but certainly Vista didn't change font sizes effectively; leaving you to change the monitor resolution and I've yet to see an LCD/LED screen display text correctly at anything but default resolution... ...for me 1080p even on a 17" 16:9 format monitor looks pretty small.

Having said that => what do folks think of the Acer Quicklite posted - (as a general purpose desktop replacement rather than dedicated gaming machine)? £749 with a Windows 7 upgrade disk http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_8935G_637465.html

I want a netbook and finding it difficult to choose between this Asus 1008ha and the HP 311c

Asus -slim, small, light, sexy, large harddrive, better keyboard but not easy to upgrade, glitchy, scratchable
£230 http://www.simplyasus.com/Asus_Eee_Pc_1008HA_679669.html

HP -fat, powerful DDR3, larger screen, easy to upgrade, seperate graphics, but poorer battery, heavier, small Harddrive
£250 http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=189898
I've recently sold my 1008HA as I've bought an Asus UL30A

The HA's are a decent little netbooks but tricky to upgreade (if you want more ram)

The N280 suits it wll, got aroung 4 hours from battery.

I got mine in January from a post on here for £199

Yeah, of course , that goes without being need to be said............
but that is not really my point is it.
I am emphasising a revolutionary change away from intel (x86) and windows(high license cost)
Toward cheap fast light non-legacy computing that is closer to your phone than a desktop.

Good Observation. Rep.

Folks above are comparing it to a 11.6" ION which is much farther off the mark.......
It is is lot slimmer 7.9MM. But a mere 70 grammes heabier for another 5 hours uptime.

I sm not gonna get another netbook . IMHO they are an interim device. I feel iPads are for media consumers. I am betting on TEGRA/ARM/ANDROID.

I am guessing by Q1 next year we see the first influx of SMARTBOOKS.

10"-12" screen, 15mm thick, Tegra (or ARM and media accelerator), Small flash-like SSD.
the upside will starter battery life of 15 hours and better.

Big brands will add 3G, touchscreen rablet hinges- bs features that are under used and over sold.

But for the domestic user we will have a great mainstream non wintel machine .

I'm almost bursting at the seams trying not to buy this!! I noticed for the same price at laptopdeals although I didn't check delivery there. I know that if I buy it I'll regret not waiting for an 11.6" version with 6 cell and N450 which would be my perfect machine and my budget is £250, all of which I'm sure is possible if I wait but this is soooo tempting!

Must. Resist.

haha it does look tempting, i ended up buying a new high capacity battery for my reg laptop or i would have bought it myself.
if a 11.6 or 12" vers is released its bound to cost over or around the 300 mark
good reason to wait however would be the fact that more models are including nvidia ion graphics (not sure how hd videos run with the n450 processor)

Just in case it's of interest to anyone else, I emailed the company asking if this model had a sim card slot. They don't.

These models unfortunately do not have an integrated SIM card slot, nor include the relevant 3G modem hardware.
This looks to be top end in all aspects of its spec, with the exception of graphics acceleration - and it also does not mention if it has one or two speakers or sync-ed ram (667 to match the bus speed).

HOT

However, the new faster more power efficient chip/mobo combos are about to appear along with USB 3 - so there will be a lot of old spec machines to clear soon.

i must say there wasn't much in it at all - i would have been happy with any of the ones you mentioned aswell.

I'm sure you'd be happy with any 1 out of the 3.

yep me too review after review and still cant decide lol least i managed to narrow it down to 3! :whistling:

Calm down....You missed the HE at £268 on Marketplace, the H is still available delivered at £255 that's the point I'm making.

Mate, I assure you RLSupplies had this on Amazon Market place Monday evening for those prices. What benefit would I gain from lying?! I only wish I'd bought at the time as they've now gone up to £300+.

Haven't voted either way....just pointing out that not allowing marketplace sellers on here is detrimental to finding the best deal sometimes.

Currently on Marketplace 1000H at £239.99
+ £14.99shipping

ican confirm that i saw this on amazon market place at that price.

i suggest to all those who want something new to show off to their mates in the office to get a everun note for under £550. is dual core, handles 1080p comfortably, has 3g, fingerprint mouse, weighs less than 700g and is touchscreen!! if you just want a good spec netbook for everyday use get an nc10 or acer for £150 from asda if you've been credit crunched.

Any links?

Other website said it with "Altec Lansing" speaker is it true? and have bigger battery pack can last about 6.5 hours.

I have had two notebooks with Altec Lansing speakers. Don't get your hopes up; they won't make much difference to the limits the notebook's body places on sound.
Why would you get one of these over the NC10?
Why has it got a pretty good mobile GPU yet a poor CPU? Could have instead been installed with those ultra-mobile and lower power intel core 2's e.g. penryn & penryn-3M low voltage cpu's - Core 2 Duo SL9300/SL9400 & Core 2 Duo SU9300/SU9400
